Sterofundin is a solution of electrolytes adjusted to their natural plasma concentrations. The purpose of administering the solution to the patient is to restore the osmotic balance in the intracellular and extracellular space. Sterofundin is a preparation used in the fight against metabolic acidosis, and isotonic dehydration. Acidosis is a condition in which the body finds itself after it has damaged one of the organs that carry out toxins, such as the kidneys or lungs. Excess acids from toxins are deposited in the body’s cells. Mild acidosis it can also occur due to a poor diet or unhealthy lifestyle, but then the body usually copes with the regulation and excretion of toxins.

Untreated acidosis can lead to the development of many serious ailments, such as diabetes, progressive osteoporosis, kidney stones or hypertension, which is why it is really important to quickly restore the balance in the body. In some situations, Sterofundin is used as a diluent for electrolyte concentrates. The preparation is used intravenously.

Sterofundin is a prescription drug and its use should be consulted with a doctor who will prescribe the doses and give instructions on how to take the preparation. The active substances of this solution are: magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, calcium chloride and sodium lactate. The concentration of the ions of the individual substances corresponds to their natural, desired concentration in the blood.

The maximum daily dose of Sterofundin is 3 liters per day for adults and adolescents and 100 ml per kilogram of body weight per day for infants. The price of Sterofundin is about PLN 160 – this price includes 10 bottles of 500 ml.

Sterofundin – contraindications and side effects

Contraindications to taking Sterofundin infusion fluid are hypervolaemia, congestive heart failure, hyperkalemia, hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and renal failure.

Particular caution should be exercised when the preparation is taken by patients with heart or kidney failure – then their condition should be monitored on an ongoing basis throughout the infusion. Adverse reactions reported in connection with the intake of Sterofundin are urticaria, fever, irritation of the vein at the injection site, and rarely intestinal obstruction.

There are no contraindications to the use of the preparation by pregnant patients, but their condition should be monitored. Other injection site side effects may be related to the injection technique.
