Staphylococcus on the face

Staphylococcus is a bacterium that can be both conditionally pathogenic for the human body and pathogenic. That is, in the first case, the bacterium simply exists on the skin or mucous membranes, without causing disease, and in the second, it leads to the development of an inflammatory process. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most dangerous types of bacteria.

The disease is capable of affecting the skin, causing purulent inflammatory processes, which are the body’s response to the introduction of a foreign agent. Such skin diseases of the face are called pyoderma. The sebaceous and sweat glands of the face, as well as the hair follicles located on it, can be affected.

According to statistics, almost a third of all pyodermas are primary, that is, they develop as a result of infection with staphylococcus aureus, and not against the background of existing diseases.

Symptoms of staphylococcus on the face

Depending on the nature of the lesion, the symptoms of staphylococcus on the face will also differ:

  • For facial folliculitis inflammation of the upper sections of the hair follicle occurs. The skin around the hair turns red, and an abscess or pustule forms in the follicle itself, containing green-yellow pus. After opening the formation, a crust or slight erosion forms on the face. Often folliculitis affects a large area of the face and scalp.

  • With the formation of a boil the process is accompanied by inflammation of the hair follicle with the capture not only of the adjacent sebaceous gland, but also of the connective tissue. In most cases, the causative formation of a boil is the penetration of Staphylococcus aureus under the skin of the face. At the same time, the formation is very painful, accompanied by a necrotic process, the skin around the boil is hyperemic. It is the skin of the face that is more often involved in the process, sometimes a boil can develop on the back of the head, neck, and back.

  • Carbuncle captures a group of hair follicles, skin and skin tissue of the face. The symptoms of a carbuncle are as follows: the skin acquires a blue tint, funnel-shaped holes form at the site of the lesion, from which purulent and necrotic masses are released. The patient suffers from general weakness, fever, nausea and vomiting, sometimes reaching loss of consciousness. Among the possible complications of carbuncle are osteomyelitis, thrombosis of the sinuses of the brain, abscess of the soft tissues of the face.

  • Hydradenite – Another skin inflammation that rarely affects the skin of the face, but still has a place to be. The inflammatory process develops in the sweat glands.

Causes of staphylococcus on the face

The main reason for the appearance of staphylococcal inflammation on the face is a manifestation of the pathological activity of the bacterium.

Favorable factors for the development of staphylococcus are:

  • Decreased protective functions of the skin and immune forces of the body.

  • Traumatization of areas of the dermis of the face.

  • Autoimmune diseases.

  • Oncological diseases.

  • The age of the person. Doctors note that children, especially younger ones, often suffer from staphylococcus on the face. This is due not only to unformed immunity, but also to the weak protective function of the skin.

  • Diseases of the endocrine gland, the presence of foci of chronic infections.

  • Hypothermia and overheating of the skin of the face, which significantly reduces its protective properties.

  • Increased sweating, which leads to a change in the bactericidal properties of the skin and becomes a fertile environment for the development of bacteria.

  • The use of low-quality facial cosmetics that cause skin inflammation.

  • Ecological state of the environment.

Treatment of staphylococcus on the face

A dermatologist is engaged in the treatment of staphylococcal inflammation on the face. The patient is prohibited from water procedures. It is necessary to exclude contact with water during the acute phase of the disease.

As you know, Staphylococcus aureus reacts poorly to some antibiotics, especially the penicillin series. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct an antibiogram before starting treatment.

The skin will need to be wiped with antiseptic agents.

It is possible to treat staphylococcus on the face by taking bacteriophages. These viruses engulf the multiplied bacteria and promote recovery.

Prevention

In addition, there are preventive measures aimed at preventing infection of the skin of the face with a pathological bacterium. First of all, it is the observance of the rules of personal hygiene. It is important to observe sanitary and hygienic standards not only at home, but also at work.

In the presence of concomitant diseases, it is necessary to more carefully care for the dermis of the face in order to increase its protective properties. This is especially true in the presence of diabetes, when even a slight scratch on the face can lead to the development of deep skin lesions.

Particular attention should also be paid to the condition of the skin of children and, if even slight inflammation occurs, consult a doctor. Protecting the dermis from the sun and frost, following a diet, avoiding traumatic situations – all these measures can prevent infection with a bacterium.
