In ancient times, there lived a young boy named Adonis, who was very much loved by the goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite went hunting with her beloved, and everywhere he went, she always followed him. Very rarely did the goddess leave her lover. And then one day, when Aphrodite did not go hunting with Adonis, the dogs attacked the trail of a large boar and led Adonis along. When the dogs drove the boar into the bushes, Adonis rushed after him and wanted to pierce the strong beast with a spear. Suddenly, the boar attacked Adonis and pierced him with his huge fangs. Because of this wound, Adonis died.

Hearing that Adonis had died, Aphrodite ran, not sparing her feet, running into rocks and gorges. Headlong she ran to her beloved. Aphrodite was dripping blood from her legs, and her footprints were everywhere. Finally, the goddess ran to Adonis, who was already lifeless. Leaning over his body, Aphrodite ordered that beautiful scarlet flowers grow in the place where the blood of Adonis was. Indeed, at the site of the death of the young man, a beautiful anemone flower (modern adonis) grew, which blooms every spring with the first rays of the sun, and scarlet roses appeared in places where Aphrodite’s blood dripped.
