Spray for the throat

Spray for the throat

The most common cause of sore throat are pathogenic microorganisms: bacteria, viruses or fungi. They cause redness of the back wall of the pharynx, tonsils, palatine arches. This is accompanied by such unpleasant symptoms as pain and sore throat, hoarseness of voice, or its complete loss. To reduce the severity of inflammation, you can use special sprays.

Most of these drugs contain components that fight infectious agents that cause inflammation. That is, throat sprays have an antimicrobial and disinfecting effect. Doctors point out that the use of aerosols can speed up recovery, since the drug is applied topically and allows you to irrigate the entire surface of the sore throat.

Throat sprays can also be used in the treatment of children. Until a certain age, children cannot dissolve tablets, and their taste is not always pleasant. In sprays, bitter components are much more successfully masked, so they do not cause rejection.

The throat spray can be used in the treatment of the following diseases:

  • Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, laryngitis in acute and chronic form.

  • Stomatitis and gingivitis.

  • Angina.

  • Antiseptic treatment of the throat before and after the upcoming surgical intervention. For example, before the upcoming operation to remove the tonsils.

Throat sprays are of the following types:

  • Sprays with an antibacterial component. One of the effective medicines is the drug Polydex containing two antibiotics – neomycin and polymyxin. It can be used both for the treatment of sore throat and against sinusitis.

  • Sprays with herbal ingredients. The choice of drugs is quite large, among them Cameton, Anginal, Chlorophyllipt, Ingalipt. In the Ingalipt spray, in addition to plant extracts, there is also an antibacterial component. As for the natural components, they are represented by herbal phytoncides, which have a pronounced antiseptic effect. Plant-based preparations are less expensive than their chemical counterparts.

  • Sprays with propolis. This bee product has a regenerative, antiviral and antifungal effect. This includes Proposol spray, which allows you to quickly relieve inflammation and restore damaged oropharyngeal mucosa.

  • Sprays with synthetic ingredients. They allow you to effectively fight bacteria and viruses, and also contain an anesthetic component. Therefore, the use of such drugs quickly relieves the symptoms of the disease. Lidocaine is present in Strepsils and Theraflu Lar sprays, hexetidine is part of Stopangin and Hexoral sprays, benzydamine is present in Tantum Verde. Lugol and Yoks sprays contain iodine. Miramistin and sprays containing chlorhexidine, such as Anti-Angin spray, have a good disinfecting effect.

There are also preparations based on sea water, for example, Aqua Maris spray. It can be used in combination with other disinfecting aerosols, it has no contraindications and is suitable for the treatment of both children and adults. The use of preparations based on sea water allows you to moisturize a sore throat, wash off pathogenic microorganisms from its mucous membrane, and eliminate perspiration. It is difficult to name the most effective throat spray, since it all depends on the cause of the inflammation.

When choosing a drug, you should focus on the symptoms of the disease:

  • Strepsils Plus, Hexaspray and Tantum Verde quickly allow you to cope with perspiration and sore throat.

  • If the throat is ticklish due to dryness of the mucous membrane, then theraflu Lar, Kameton, Proposan preparations can be used.

  • When a patient is diagnosed with angina, antibiotics are necessary. Treatment can be supplemented with Hexaspray, Kameton, Lugol, Chlorophyllipt.

General recommendations for the use of throat sprays:

Spray for the throat

  • Before irrigation, it is necessary to rinse the throat with boiled water at room temperature. This is necessary to wash away mucus, pus and food particles from its surface. You can just take 2-3 sips of water to clean not only the tonsils, but also the larynx.

  • The spray must be evenly treated on the right and left halves of the throat. The spray container should be held vertically. The number of clicks depends on which drug is used for treatment. A more precise description can be found in the instructions.

  • After treatment, you should refrain from eating and drinking for up to 30 minutes.

  • Sore throat should be treated at least 3 times a day.

  • When the doctor recommends treating the throat with several drugs, the interval between procedures should be 2-3 hours.

Do not use disinfectant sprays for more than one week. Otherwise, the risk that bacteria will develop resistance to them increases. The duration of therapy should be determined by the doctor.

Before starting treatment, you should pay attention to contraindications to the use of sprays for the treatment of the throat:

  • The age of the child is up to 3 years. In this case, there is a risk of developing laryngospasm during the treatment of the throat.

  • Obstructive bronchitis.

  • Asthma.

If a person suffers from allergies, then he should use any preparations for treating the throat with caution. Neglect of this recommendation increases the risk of developing angioedema, which is a life-threatening condition. If sputum is separated during coughing, then it is possible to use the expectorant drug Lazolvan.

With regard to the use of sprays for the treatment of pregnant women, special care must be taken. When applied topically, active active ingredients are much more slowly absorbed into the blood, but, nevertheless, they create a certain concentration in the body, which can negatively affect the growth and development of the fetus. During pregnancy, drugs such as Tantum Verde and Strepsils plus should not be used. If there is an urgent need to use a throat spray, then the choice should be stopped on a herbal preparation.

With regard to the treatment of children, over the age of 2 years, the following throat sprays may be used with caution:

  • Ingalipt, Oracept – after 2 years.

  • Aqua-Maris and Miramistin – after 3 flights.

  • Tantum Verde and Theraflu LAR – after 4 years.

  • Kameton and Lugol – after 5 years.

  • Hexoral, Hexaspray, Octenisept – after 6 years.

  • Strepsils plus, Anti-Angin, Proambassador – after 15 years.

  • Over the age of 15 years, all drugs for the treatment of the throat can be used.

The most affordable is the drug Ingalipt, which contains an antibacterial substance from the group of sulfonamides. Therefore, it can only be used to treat a bacterial infection.

For 60-100 rubles, you can buy the drug Kameton.

How are sprays different from aerosols?

Spray for the throat

Often, even a specialist cannot answer the question, what is the difference between an aerosol and a spray, nevertheless, it exists. First of all, it concerns the depth of penetration of the medicinal substance. In aerosols, the drug delivery system is built in such a way that the liquid particles leaving the nebulizer have a small diameter. This allows them to penetrate into the deep sections of the respiratory system and settle on the bronchi. Therefore, the aerosol is more effective to use in the treatment of bronchitis.

The spray delivers drug particles with a diameter of 5 microns or more. This allows it to be evenly distributed over the surface of the oropharynx, without penetrating deep into.

The disadvantage of aerosols is that they contain a substance such as a propellant. It is he who pushes the drug out. The propellant is not toxic to the human body, but increases the risk of allergies in the patient.

Children under three years of age are not treated with aerosols, due to the risk of laryngospasm, in which there is a sharp contraction of the muscles of the larynx, and this can lead to suffocation. Therefore, doctors strongly recommend that children either inhale with a nebulizer or rinse the nasopharynx with saline solutions.

If the child has reached the younger preschool age (3-5 years), then sprays can be used to treat a sore throat, but preference should be given to preparations of plant origin, including:

  • Cameton.

  • Inhaliptus.

  • Spray lotion with mint, sage and edelweiss from Vivasan (Switzerland).

  • If the disease is severe, then Miramistin or Tantum Verde can be used.

  • Preparations with iodine, for example, Lugol, must be used with extreme caution. If the child complains of a burning sensation in the throat, then the spray should be discarded and a doctor should be consulted.
