Split ends: how to repair damaged ends?

Split ends are a real obsession for those who wear shoulder-length hair or long hair: the lengths appear dry and damaged, the hair loses its shine and suppleness. Rest assured, split hair is not inevitable: here are some tips for repairing damaged ends.

Split ends, damaged hair: should you cut?

Split ends are not inevitable, with the right actions and the right care, you can recover (to a certain extent of course) from damaged ends. To take good care of your hair, you must first understand what is called split hair: keratin, the cement that nourishes the hair, is exhausted over the lengths for various reasons: pollution, stress, friction, tight hairstyles, frequent use of hair dryer or straightener.

When the keratin runs out on lengths that have been over-used, you end up with an inch or two of coarse, brittle, unruly hair. This is called split ends. The question is: should we cut everything? We are not going to lie to each other, the ideal in this case is to slightly cut the ends: even a single centimeter cut will already offer an improvement if you want to keep your lengths as they are. Cutting a little is the best way to repair split ends quickly. Once the most damaged part is eliminated, we move on to care to catch up the rest of the lengths.

Fork: use appropriate care for damaged hair

On the care side, you will have to pamper your hair so as not to damage it further. If you are looking for a shampoo for split hair, shampoo for damaged hair is fine. Be careful if you have oily hair despite dry ends, it would be better to use a mild shampoo for normal hair and bet on a conditioner and a mask for dry hair. Shampoos for damaged hair tend to be high in fatty agents and can make excess sebum worse.

Whatever happens, use shampoos adapted to your hair type so as not to unbalance the scalp. For split hair, focus on the lengths with nourishing masks and conditioners. Shea, honey, egg or even avocado work wonders on damaged hair.

Serums, oils and lotions to quickly treat split hair

For those who want quick results, leave-in care will be your best allies! Several ranges of products are available in drugstores or hairdressers to repair split ends. With concentrated formulas that you can apply to your hair daily, leave-in care will quickly restore your split ends to their natural glow. Warning: serums and lotions are only applied to the lengths so as not to grease the scalp.

Also for girls in a hurry, vegetable oil baths can heal damaged hair in no time: avocado oil, coconut oil, or even sweet almond oil are ideal for split hair. To be applied to the lengths then to leave on overnight under food film, the vegetable oil deeply nourishes the fiber to restore suppleness, softness and shine to the hair. In the morning, wash your hair with a mild shampoo to remove residue. To do once a week, your split hair will quickly become an old story!

Split ends: bet on prevention!

Split ends are “fixable” to some extent. If the hair is constantly used and if it undergoes many colorings, it will not necessarily be possible to regain the natural shine of your hair. In order to avoid the drama, it is especially necessary to prevent the forks!

Choose gentle and natural care for your hair and limit the use of colorings. Heating devices such as hair dryers, curlers or straighteners should also be limited. If these devices are really part of your beauty routine, apply a thermo-protective treatment before each use that will prevent the lengths from burning.

To eliminate pollution residues that can alter the hair fiber, also remember to brush your hair well every evening, gently so as not to break it, but carefully to remove pollution and styling product residues.
