Spirulina is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. It contains 100 mg of iron per 30 g. For comparison with spinach, we deliver as much as 10 times less. Such a high content of easily digestible iron allows for an effective fight against anemia. In addition, it is rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and B vitamins. This alga can also contribute to an excess of vitamins and minerals. There have been few reports of severe neonatal hypercalcaemia associated with maternal consumption of spirulina.

Spirulina also has its dark sides. Cyanobacteria contain hepatotoxins that damage the liver. In addition, spirulina can be contaminated with a neurotoxin, the so-called anatoxin, which contributes to a reduction in coordination, and may impair muscle function and the respiratory system.

We should also remember that products based on microalgae available on the market, including spirulina, are dietary supplements. Therefore, they are not subject to strict quality control, as is the case with pharmaceuticals. Research shows that some of the preparations of this type available on the market may be contaminated with toxic substances. So it’s important to buy your Spirulina from a known source to avoid undesirable clinical symptoms.
