Spasm in the throat: reasons how to relieve

A spasm in the throat is a reflex contraction of the muscles in the larynx. At the same time, it becomes difficult to speak and even just take a breath. You need to understand the reasons for the appearance of such spasms and be able to provide first aid when they occur, perhaps this will save someone’s life.

A spasm in the throat prevents you from breathing freely

Here’s what leads to discomfort in the throat:

  • Pharyngitis or laryngitis. These are diseases in which the mucous membranes of the larynx or pharynx become inflamed. Difficulty breathing is one of the accompanying symptoms. The treatment of these diseases is dealt with by an otolaryngologist, or in a simple way, an ENT.
  • Thyroid pathology. Disturbances in the work of the endocrine system are often manifested by a sensation of a lump in the throat and unpleasant spasms.
  • Psychoneurological disorders. Chronic stress, constant lack of sleep, tense psychological atmosphere at home and at work, difficult experiences due to any accidents can lead to nervous disorders. At the same time, it often becomes difficult for a person to swallow even liquid food. Concomitant symptoms are loss of voice and dry mouth.
  • Severe allergic reaction. Sometimes allergy manifests itself not as skin rashes or sneezing, but difficulty breathing. In severe cases, Quincke’s edema may develop.

All these reasons require a prompt visit to a doctor.

So that a sudden spasm does not lead to suffocation, you need to figure out how to relieve discomfort:

  • You need to provide an influx of fresh air, unbutton a tight collar on your clothes, open windows or leave a stuffy room, take a comfortable position, sit down or lie down.
  • Drink warm water. The temperature of the liquid is very important, as cold water can provoke even more cramping.
  • If the spasm does not release, you need to give the patient a sniff of ammonia.
  • You can relieve a prolonged attack if you put your feet in hot water for a few minutes.

After an attack, a generous warm or hot drink is recommended.

Sometimes food stuck in the throat is the cause of the spasms. It is necessary to cough up, exhaling sharply, or knock the victim with force on the back between the shoulder blades in the direction from the bottom up.

If the attacks are repeated regularly and their duration increases from time to time, you need to consult a doctor to be examined and establish their exact cause. This is necessary for the appointment of competent and effective treatment.
