Esotericism claims to possess secret knowledge about a person, possession of knowledge accessible only to the «initiated». What esotericists will tell you cannot be verified in any way. You can either believe this or not.
The sources of secret knowledge are usually not indicated in any way.
- Sometimes there are dull references to ancient manuscripts, while, upon closer examination, the manuscripts themselves do not directly contain secret knowledge. If you freely interpret their artistic images and the impressions of the author, then you can read anything you like there.
- Another source of secret knowledge is the personal revelations of adepts. Translated into Russian, a person dreamed or imagined something, and it made such an impression on him that he now considers it to be the receiver of the Secrets of the Universe.
Accordingly, a typical problem within esotericism is internal disputes between esotericists, where it is impossible to prove anything. Usually decided at the level of authority: if your «revelations» reinforce the revelations of a promoted authority, then they are also recognized. If they do not correspond or contradict, they are rejected as nonsense.
