“Someone wanted to track me down”: an unexpected find in a woman’s handbag

Imagine: after a pleasant evening in a restaurant, club or cinema, you find a foreign object in your purse. With it, a person unknown to you is trying to track you down. What to do? A user of a social network shares her experience.

A young artist from Texas, Sheridan, had a great time at a restaurant for a friend’s birthday party. When she returned home, she accidentally found an unfamiliar keychain in her purse.

Such Bluetooth key fobs (trackers) are used to track the location of lost keys. It sends a signal to the smartphone connected to it. To conduct surveillance with it, the owner of the smartphone had to be nearby so as not to lose the signal.

Sheridan realized that someone was trying to find out where she lived in this way. She turned off Bluetooth by removing the battery from the device. And she told her friends about the find, asking if it was their joke. But everyone replied that they would not have thought of such a thing. Obviously, the tracker was planted by someone else. This frightened Sheridan and prompted her to record a warning video for users of the social network TikTok.

Commentators thanked the girl for the warning: “I have two daughters growing up, I teach them to be careful. So much to consider these days!” One of the men wrote that this is not the easiest and cheapest way to pursue. But most women were frightened by how easy it was for an ill-wisher to track down where they lived. Sheridan was advised to contact the police and give them the “spy” find.

The problem of harassment, stalking and unwanted advances by men continues to be a problem on both sides of the ocean. And it is quite natural that women are often suspicious of those who show attention to them. How to make an acquaintance without scaring a girl, says another TikTok user.

Simone was waiting for her friend in the park, and one of the passers-by spoke to her. The man did not try to get too close, did not violate her personal space. He didn’t appreciate her looks. He simply said that the girl looked immersed in meditation and contemplation of nature.

Simone liked that the stranger didn’t pressure her, didn’t rush her, and asked for her phone number only after her friend came and the girl wasn’t alone. Simone said that this behavior made her feel safe.

“Don’t take this as a pick-up scenario,” jokes Simone. “But in general, this is a great example of tact, respect for personal space and normal human contact in a dating situation.”
