Solu-Medrol is a strong drug with anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and minimal mineralocorticoid properties. It is a drug used in cases that can be life-threatening, such as anaphylactic shock. Solu-Medrol is also used in neurology, ophthalmology and hormone therapy.
Active substance and action of Solu-Medrol
The manufacturer of Solu-Medrol, available only on prescription, is Pifzer Europe. The preparation can be purchased in the form of a powder and a solvent, from which a solution for injection is prepared. Sulu-Medrol comes in different doses: 40 mg, 125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg and 1 g of methylpredinizolone in the form of sodium succinate. The active substance of the drug is methylpredinizone. It is a chemical compound with long-lasting and symptomatic anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. The drug has no effect on the causes that provoked the inflammation.
Use of Solu-Medrol
Due to its action, Solu-Medrol has a wide range of applications. It is often used in cases of:
- threats to life caused by anaphylactic shock,
- acute allergies or serum sickness,
- swelling of the brain
- hypoglycemic coma,
- severe infections.
Solu-Medrol is also used in cases of problems with the respiratory tract (acute pneumonia or asthma). In addition, the drug is often used in neurology and ophthalmology (acute spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, severe and chronic inflammation of the iris, retina, cornea or eyeball).
Dosage of Solu-Medrol
The dosage of the drug is determined by the doctor. The Solu-Medrol solution should be administered either as an intravenous or intramuscular injection, or as an intravenous infusion. Remember to store it properly. The drug should be tightly closed and inaccessible to children.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you are hypersensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients of Solu-Medrol. Also in the case of certain diseases and conditions (e.g. low potassium levels, peptic ulcer disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, circulatory and respiratory failure, glaucoma, diabetes, kidney diseases) and when taking certain medications (e.g. heart medications, anticoagulants, painkillers, anti-diabetic drugs, drugs for high blood pressure and other anti-inflammatory drugs), it is necessary to inform the doctor about this fact.
Be aware that any medication may have some side effects. In the case of Solu-Medrol, side effects may include:
- symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome,
- posteroid adrenal insufficiency,
- acne,
- purple stretch marks,
- skin changes and vascular blemishes,
- hypertension,
- steroid diabetes,
- osteoporosis,
- impotence,
- cataract,
- glaucoma,
- stomach ulcer
- inflammation of the pancreas,
- gastrointestinal bleeding.
The drug can also cause side effects in the form of immune disorders, such as decreased immunity, susceptibility to infections, mycoses. In children, the side effects of this medication may be stunted growth and imbalance. It is not recommended to drive vehicles or operate machinery after taking the drug, as it may cause visual disturbances.
Application of Solu-Medrol during pregnancy and breastfeeding
The use of Solu-Medrol during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited only to necessary cases. Only the doctor decides about the administration of the drug.
