Solidago: planting and care
Solidago blooms in late summer. Its yellow inflorescences are pleasing to the eye until autumn frosts. In addition, it has healing properties. If you are thinking about growing this plant, learn how to keep it.
Planting a garden flower solidago
Despite its primitive appearance, the plant requires attention to itself. The flower propagates by self-sowing and root suckers. It quickly takes over the area, displacing weeds and other plants. Even the fence is not an obstacle for him. There are dwarf and tall flower varieties. The former reach 2 m in height, the latter – only 40 cm.
Choose a sunny or slightly shaded area for planting. For a plant to bloom magnificently, it needs to be grown only in nutritious and breathable soil, but even on poor soil it will grow. It is better to plant seedlings at the end of April, when the soil warms up. Add compost or humus to the soil before planting. After planting seedlings on a flower bed, tamp the earth and water it abundantly.
Breeding methods:
- Seeds. It is necessary to sow the planting material when the air temperature reaches 18˚С. The sprouts will appear in 2 weeks.
- Seedlings. You can purchase it or grow it yourself.
- By dividing the bush. You can divide adult plants in spring and autumn, no more than once every 3-4 years.
- By cuttings. Cuttings should be rooted in early summer in a mixture of sand and peat, and then transplanted into open ground.
When planting, leave a distance of 40 cm between flowers.
This garden flower is completely unpretentious in its content. The care is as follows:
- Water the plant during dry periods, otherwise flowering will be poor.
- In spring and summer, feed flowers with complex mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content.
- Tie tall bushes to a support.
- For the winter, cut the stems at a height of 10-15 cm from the soil surface. You do not need to cover the plant.
- For the prevention of diseases and pests in the spring and autumn, treat the bushes with a decoction of horsetail.
To prevent self-seeding, immediately tear off the faded inflorescences. Since the bushes grow quickly, repot the plant every 3 years in the spring.
The use of solidago is diverse. It can be used in landscaping. The plant looks especially beautiful in group plantings with lofant, phlox, hosta, Siberian iris and aster. Tall varieties can be used to create hedges.
