Sodium formate (E237)

Sodium formate (E237) is a preservative responsible for ensuring that food and preparations do not deteriorate and retain important qualities for as long as possible.

Food supplement prevents the appearance of fungus and various bacteria. It has certain antimicrobial effects, but only when immersed in an acidic environment. Sodium formate is a gray, white and sometimes greenish crystalline powder. It is highly soluble in water, but practically insoluble in alcohols and ethers.

The substance is non-flammable and non-explosive, but at the same time, when working with sodium formate, smoking and open access to fire are not allowed.

Sodium formate can be seen in the composition of many liquids – in the juices of certain plants and the biological fluid of a living organism.

This dietary supplement is banned in some countries (United States of America, European Union, Russian Federation).

Application of food additive

Permissible daily dose – 3 mg per 1 kilogram of human weight. Previously, Russia allowed the use of a preservative in the production of lemonades and other soft drinks. At the same time, no more than 210 mg per 1 liter of drink was allowed. Or in combination with benzoates – less than 360 mg per liter of drink.

Until recently, this substance was used for fish marinades, for marinating vegetables and for replacing salt in dietary nutrition. At the moment, they began to be replaced by safer additives.

In addition to the food industry, sodium formate is added to some medicines. For example, Medichronal. It is also used for the preservation of certain cosmetic preparations, for tanning leather, for dyeing fabrics and printing wallpapers.

The effect of the supplement on the body

Sodium formate (E237) has some effect on the human body, and has a hazard level of 3. This additive is most dangerous for the upper respiratory tract and mucous membranes. Unprotected contact with the preservative may cause irritation. When working with the additive (E237), it is necessary to wear protective clothing – a special gown, a respirator and rubber gloves. In the event of an emergency, be sure to use a gas mask (“A” or “M”).
