Sodium chloride is a substance that contains sodium and chloride iodine – necessary for the proper functioning of the body. They usually come in the form of ampoules containing a solution for intravenous injection.
Sodium chloride – action
The action of sodium chloride results directly from the role of chloride and sodium ions. Sodium is considered the most important electrolyte of extracellular fluid. In contrast, chlorine is the main anion of the extracellular fluid. Sodium chloride works by maintaining the electrolyte balance of the body fluids. It shows irrigating properties.
According to the accepted standards, the normal concentration of sodium in the blood serum is 135–145 mmol / l. The concentration of chlorine is in the range of 95–105 mmol / l.
Sodium chloride – destiny
Sodium chloride is used in the case of electrolyte disturbances. It can also be used for local eye rinsing, throat and nose rinsing.
Sodium chloride – contraindications to use
Contraindications to the administration of sodium chloride include:
- deep electrolyte disturbances accompanied by hyperchloraemia, hypokalemia, hypernatremia,
- kidney failure
- pulmonary oedema.
Sodium chloride – warnings
Warnings for the use of sodium chloride:
- caution should be exercised in patients with heart failure, heart disease, renal failure, pre-eclampsia,
- before administering larger amounts of 0,9% sodium chloride solution, it should be warmed to body temperature,
- it is recommended to take a break of at least 10 minutes when using several eye medications.
Sodium chloride – drug interactions
Sodium chloride may interact with other medications. At the same time, other drugs containing chloride ions and sodium ions can not be administered.
Sodium chloride – side effects
Certain side effects may occur with the administration of sodium chloride. These are i.a. fever, headache, dizziness, nausea, anxiety, coma, skin tightness, tachycardia. The above symptoms apply to intravenous administration.
Mild eye irritation may occur in people using sodium chloride eye drops.
