history of the holiday

Social care for the needy in Our Country has a rich history. The first prerequisites go back to the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries, when churches and monasteries provided assistance mainly. In the XNUMXth century, by royal decree, the first almshouses for the children of the poor began to be created, where they learned the necessary knowledge and craft. In such institutions, it was possible to receive benefits, pensions and land allotments.

Of great importance for the development of the system of public protection are the decrees of Peter I on the establishment of hospitals in all provinces for those who could not work for health reasons, for the elderly and illegitimate babies. In Our Country, the Lutheran Church was actively involved in charity work.

During the reign of Catherine II, nursing homes, a midwife with a maternity ward for poor women, orphanages, and public schools were created.

In the middle of the XNUMXth century, for the first time, people began to attract people to gratuitous assistance to those in need, appealing to a sense of social duty. The cause of poverty in those years was considered, first of all, illiteracy, so social assistance was sent to educate the masses. Sunday folk schools developed, where they taught for free.

Under Alexander I, the Imperial Philanthropic Society was founded, and through the efforts of the French philanthropist and teacher Valentin Hayuy, the first institute for the blind was founded.

During the Crimean, -Turkish wars, communities of sisters of mercy appeared, and later the Red Cross Society.

The XNUMXth century saw an active growth in social services under the leadership of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development. New professions began to appear – social educators and social workers. Mental health centers opened.

In 1994, the association of social workers put forward a proposal to establish on June 8, the historic day of the formation of the first almshouse, a professional holiday that would remind of the importance of social events for society and the state. But only four years later, the President of the Federation signed a corresponding decree. Thus, in 2000, a new, but such a noble holiday appeared – the Day of the Social Worker.
