The social network par excellence! A true global phenomenon with more than 400 million registered worldwide, Facebook is the virtual place where all young people meet after class. MySpace

It works like an intra-blogging network. Each user has their own website where they can post videos, photos and comments. People who wish to communicate with each other can accept each other as friends. They will then be able to know who is connected to MySpace at the same time as they are.

 

Messenger

It’s the instant messaging that anyone with a computer with an Internet connection has. She is the pioneer in this field. It allows you to chat live, either by written messages, or by using a microphone and webcam. After creating an e-mail address, all you have to do is request the addition of your personal or professional contacts.

Social networks: what are the risks for my child?

Facebook

Many adolescents do not hesitate to leave very personal information on this network, such as their address or telephone number. It is essential to remind your child to never write this type of information, and to check the privacy settings carefully.

Your toddler can also join groups to express his tastes, his belonging… Again, it is better not to go just anywhere. These groups are generally public, therefore easily detectable.

Young Swiss students have learned this the hard way. They had fun creating or just joining a group talking about one of their teacher in a not very complimentary way, the title being “so that Madame X degreases”. Quickly spotted by the school, they risk a sentence of community service and a fine. Proof that the virtual can have very real consequences!

MySpace

Again, adolescents are often tempted to provide their contacts with private information, such as their address or phone number, without realizing the possible risks. It is important to remind them never to give out this type of information through a social network.

Messenger

The main risk of this social network can be a bad meeting on the Internet. Without becoming paranoid, it’s important to make sure your child knows exactly who they’re talking to.

Another risk to be aware of: a contact may be the victim of a virus. It is a good idea to warn your toddler not to accept files sent on the instant messaging window without being completely sure that the sending is from a friend. Small hint to avoid unpleasant surprises: generally, the person does not have the same way of speaking …
