Can Cell Phone Use Affect Sperm Quality? Although a lot of research has been carried out on this topic so far, Korean scientists decided to update it. Their conclusions should be read mainly by men who are planning to become fathers in the future.

Since 2012, many studies have been published on the effect of mobile phones on sperm quality. South Korean scientists decided to look at them to discover common results. This resulted in a comprehensive meta-analysis that was published in November 2021 in Environmental Research. What conclusions did the scientists come to?

Do cell phones affect semen quality?

Previous research has shown that cell phones emit radio frequency electromagnetic waves (RF-EMW) that can be absorbed by the human body, causing adverse side effects for the brain, heart and reproductive function. Korean scientists focused on the latter aspect. Of the 435 published studies and records from 2012-2021 that they analyzed, they found 18 out of 4280 sperm samples that were fit for statistical analysis.

Experts found no relationship between the time spent in front of the phone screen and the quality of semen. They only noticed that contact with the device itself was associated with reduced sperm movement and viability. Their results were in line with previous research on the subject. However, they had some limitations due to the scant amount of patient data and the fact that the cell phone models that were tested at the time are now outdated.

Knowing that the number of mobile phone users is likely to increase in the future, it is time for us to start considering RF-EMW exposure as one of the primary factors in reducing sperm quality in the male population.

Yun Hak Kim, principal investigator and associate professor at Busan National University, also noted that more research is needed to be carried out on new phone models. However, according to him, men should already significantly reduce the use of these devices.
