Researchers at the University of California examined 212 patients who either snore, talk at night, have difficulty breathing during sleep, or even experience involuntary short-term breath holding. They then calculated how many calories people burn per day based on the severity of their health problems.
It turned out that regularly snoring people lose about 2 thousand calories, and occasionally snoring people lose 1626 calories. But this, alas, does not mean that those suffering from this deficiency have a slender figure: on the contrary, poor sleep and the associated fatigue usually induce people to eat more and choose high-calorie foods.
In addition, the lack of adequate sleep deprives victims of snoring of physical strength, so they mostly lead a sedentary lifestyle during the day – not to mention fitness and other useful exercises. In combination with a high-calorie diet, this sooner or later leads to obesity.
The causes of snoring can be very different – enlarged tonsils, inflammation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa due to infection or allergies, swelling, alcoholism, and others. Recent studies have also shown that the risk of snoring is higher in people who let a pet, such as a dog, into their bed since childhood.
