Snifter glass: what is it, why and how to drink, what is it made of

Sniffer – what is it?

The very word “snifter (snifter)” comes from the English sniff – “sniff”, and indeed – often in the collections of table etiquette you can see the advice: “bring a glass to your nose and carefully inhale the aroma concentrated in the upper part of the vessel.”

Classic cognac glasses are called snifters, they are also “brandy glass”, “balloon”, “cognac balloon”. These are round vessels, tapering upwards, on a short stem. Of these, it is customary to taste drinks of the XO category – extra old (at least 6 years old). The older the cognac, the thinner its taste and deeper aroma.

Why drink from a snifter?

In order to get real pleasure from cognac, first of all, you need to be able to really feel its aroma.

How to drink from a snifter?

The golden liquid is poured into the glass by about a quarter – up to the widest point of the bowl, warmed with the warmth of the palms, allowed to properly saturate with oxygen and “breathe”.

What is a snifter made of?

Canonical snifters are made of thin glass or crystal. The design feature is such that even if a glass of cognac topples over, the liquid will not spill, but remains inside.

Since these glasses are intended for expensive elite alcohol, they are often decorated with gilding, inlay, and precious stones.

What else is worth knowing?

In addition to the snifter, there is also a brandy glass, but it is mainly used for tasting.
