A bottle of Contrabando rum resembles props from the filming of a parody action movie: on a simple, deliberately cheap label, a huge black inscription “CONTRABANDO” stands out, overlapping the information that the 5-year-old drink was produced in the Dominican Republic. And all this is not an original marketing ploy, but the pure truth. Quality Caribbean rum really has a lot to do with smuggling.
Historical reference. The notary Fernando Mora, who was vacationing in the Dominican Republic in 1998, was simply fascinated by the rum he bought in a small shop. The drink seemed to absorb the aromas of the tropical forest. True, the name and coordinates of the manufacturer were not on the label, but the seller swore that the rum was natural and aged.
Returning home to Spain, Senor Mora carefully packed several bottles of the cherished rum into a suitcase. Don Fernando’s friends were also delighted with the taste of the drink, so those of them who were going to spend their holidays in the Dominican Republic were keenly interested in where they could get such a miracle.
Once, the unnamed Dominican rum was tasted by Senor Luis Enrique Caballero Dominguez, president of the old Spanish winery Luis Caballero SA. The businessman liked the drink so much that he decided to find out who still produces fragrant rum.
It turned out that the mysterious alcohol is produced by the Dominican company Oliver & Oliver, founded in the early 90s of the XX century by a family of Cuban immigrants. The head of the firm, Pedro Ramon López Oliver, used the recipes of his ancestor, the famous 1997th century blender Juanillo Oliver. The company produced the first batch of rum in XNUMX and since then has been constantly increasing production volumes.
Luis Caballero SA in 2012 acquired from Oliver & Oliver the rights to the rum that Señor Caballero liked. The drink was called Contrabando: after all, for the first time it came to Spain by smuggling, in a tourist’s suitcase. Already in 2013, Contrabando rum won a double gold medal at the Congreso Internacional del Ron competition.
Features rum Contrabando
Contrabando – amber-colored rum with a strength of 40%, a blend of rums aged 5 years (according to the “solera” system). The drink is made and bottled at the Dominican company Oliver & Oliver. The company uses the best Panamanian, Nicaraguan and Martinique spirits obtained by distillation of fermented sugar cane juice (no molasses added).
Rum has a vanilla-fruity aroma with a dominant coconut note. Sweet fruity taste is balanced by a light woody bitterness.
