Do you think you don’t smoke much? Five cigarettes a day. That’s not much considering your friend burns up to 5 at the same time. It turns out, however, that no matter how much you smoke, unfavorable changes are taking place in your lungs. And it’s worse than you think.
Smoking harms your health
“Smoking is harmful to health” – everyone knows it, but still 26 percent. Poles smoke cigarettes, one in five does it regularly, and one in twentieth occasionally. Tobacco smoking causes nearly 4 million deaths each year. About 11 smokers die every day. Each cigarette shortens our lives by an average of 5,5 minutes.
Tobacco smoke contains over 7000 compounds, including: acetone, cadmium, pyrene, methanol, phenol, benzopyrene, toluene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and other toxic and carcinogenic compounds.
Cigarette smoke affects every organ and system in our body. It irritates the oral mucosa, esophagus, stomach, poisons the pancreas, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Do you smoke little? You’re damaging your lungs anyway
Researchers at Columbia University tested the lung function of 250 volunteers, including light smokers, heavy smokers who smoke up to 000 cigarettes a day, former smokers and non-smokers. It turned out that regardless of whether we smoke a few or several dozen cigarettes a day, lung function decreases at a similar rate. The study has been published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
The editorial board recommends:
- Children who live with a smoker are more likely to miss lessons
- Smoking during pregnancy weakens the baby’s immunity
- Third-hand tobacco smoke can also be harmful to your health
