Smell in the closet: how to get rid of?
Getting rid of the smell in the closet is not so easy. First, you need to establish the reason why it appeared, and then eliminate it. Some of the most common reasons are stale clothes, the use of perfumes or deodorants, dampness, and poor-quality material from which the furniture itself is made.
How to get rid of unpleasant odors in the closet?
Furniture specialists do not recommend placing the cabinet near a wall adjacent to the kitchen or bathroom, as this will increase the humidity in the cabinet and provoke mold growth. If your apartment is damp, you can put a bag of silica gel on one of the shelves. The little silica gel balls have everyone seen in new shoe boxes. For the cabinet, silica gel can be purchased at a building supplies store. This substance will allow you to forget about dampness in the closet forever.
In no case should you hang dry clothes in the closet.
Cabinets should be ventilated at least twice a year. To do this, you will have to get out all the contents and leave the doors of your wardrobe open for several hours. During this time, it is imperative to wipe all the shelves and walls. In order not to waste time, conduct an audit of things, get rid of what is dead weight and that you have not worn for a long time.
Very often, an unpleasant smell in the closet appears due to the fact that the clothes put on a couple of times are put on the shelf next to clean ones. Another common cause is the smell of tobacco. He is quite persistent, but getting rid of him is not difficult. It is enough to wet a large towel and hang it in the closet. Close the doors and wait about half an hour. Then remove the towel, wash and hang up again.
Usually 3-4 repetitions of these actions is enough for the tobacco stench to completely disappear from your closet.
Kitchen cabinets require constant maintenance. Firstly, in the room itself there are quite sharp temperature fluctuations, often too humid or too dry air, a lot of foreign aromas. Secondly, due to economy or banal laziness, people too rarely revise the leftovers. A handful of sugar, an open pack of pasta a month ago, a can of flour – all this is a fertile environment for the appearance of fungi or insects. Kitchen cabinets should be cleaned every one to two weeks. Spoiled food should be thrown away immediately. You can put a small container with ground natural coffee in the cabinet.
You can get rid of the unpleasant odor both in the wardrobe and in the kitchen cupboard by wiping the shelves and walls with a cloth dipped in a weak vinegar solution
When you just bought a new cabinet, it smells peculiar, and sometimes frankly stinks. If there is a need to eliminate this aroma as quickly as possible, open a window and arrange ventilation for at least a couple of hours. There is no need for expensive professional products and polishes. It is enough just to “arm yourself” with ordinary tea bags. Unused tea bags should be arranged in corners and shelves and left for at least 7 days.
Do-it-yourself deodorants for the wardrobe
To keep your closet smelling good, you can make a deodorant with your own hands.
There can be several options:
- on the shelves in the closet you can put bags with aromatic herbs and spices (rose petals, lavender, cloves, cinnamon, mint)
- among the linen, you can lay out pieces of toilet soap, which will not only give a fresh smell, but also prevent moths from starting up
- perfume is an excellent tool: dry perfume can be attached to the walls of the cabinet, bottles with the remains of your usual perfume can be simply put on the shelves
- citrus peels, spread out on shelves or hung in bags, can be an excellent aroma for the cabinet
