Men all over the world worry that their penis is smaller than it should be or that they won’t be able to please their partner because of it. However, research suggests that most men underestimate the size of their body parts.

Small penis – measuring the length of the penis

The opinion of most men about their penis is formed in childhood. Growing up, they can see their older brother’s, friend’s or father’s penis and mentally compare it to their own. Concerns and anxiety about penis size can also arise from the taunts of others in adolescence or after the comments of a sexual partner.

However, men often look at their penis from the wrong perspective. To see your penis like everyone else, you should look at yourself naked in front of a large mirror. The penis looks longer and larger than seen from above. At some point, most boys pull out a ruler to see how long their penis is. There is no point in doing this when the penis is at rest, as the length of the penis at rest can vary greatly depending, for example, on how cold it is in the room.

For an accurate measurement, you should measure when you have an erection. Here’s the correct way to get an accurate measurement.

  1. To measure our penis we will need a ruler or a tape measure.
  2. To measure length, start measuring from the base of the penis where the penis meets the pubic bone.
  3. Then a ruler or tailor’s tape should be drawn along the entire length of the penis from the base to the tip (glans). Let’s not measure the excess length of the foreskin.
  4. To measure the circumference, wrap a flexible tailor’s tape around the shaft of the penis at the base or around the midpoint between the base and the head.
  5. If you measure your penis while it is resting, be careful not to pull or stretch it, as this could potentially injure your penis.

Small penis and medium penis size

The average length of the penis is about 9,16 cm when resting and 13,12 cm when erect. But how were these results obtained?

Over the years, several studies have attempted to come up with a specific number for the average penis size.

One smaller 2014 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine looked at the average penis size of 1661 men. The researchers found that the average length and girth of the participants’ erect penis was 14,15 centimeters and 12,23 centimeters, respectively.

Another larger study from 2014 collected data from over 15 men to determine the mean size. In this study, measurements of length and circumference were taken both at rest and during an erection. The results showed that the average penis length was 000 cm at rest and 9,16 cm when erected. In addition, the average circumference of the penis was measured as 13,12 cm at rest and 9,31 cm when erect.

Note that the first study used self-reported measurements, while the second study used measurements made by a healthcare professional. Both studies have their limitations, but the numbers given are in line with similar studies on the average penis size.

It should also be added that the 2019 study found that many men overestimate the size of their penis when self-reporting measurement results, especially if they had previously experienced sexual intercourse with another person. 170 men of college age who participated in a course on human sexuality participated in the study. The results showed that people who had had sexual experiences with another person were more likely to overestimate their penis size than people who did not have shared sexual experiences.

Overall, measurements from similar studies give a good average and are important, but there’s always more to know.

There is also a wide variation in the angle of penile erection. Some erect penises point straight up, others point down. Some have a slight left or right bend. It doesn’t have the right shape. If you have a more significant flexion in your penis that may cause pain or difficulty having sex, contact your GP. Sometimes these can be symptoms of Peyronie’s disease.

Small penis – when does the penis grow?

Research suggests that there are different periods of penis growth throughout our life cycle. In one study, researchers traced penis size in more than 3000 men from birth to 16 years of age.

They found that the average penis grew rapidly from birth to around 1 year of age. Between the ages of 1 and 11, penis growth slowed down to some extent. Around the age of 11 and entering puberty, scientists observed another period of rapid growth. It is assumed that the penis does not stop growing until the age of 21.

It is worth emphasizing here that you cannot enlarge or shrink your penis with exercise or supplements.

A small penis – when does it actually seem small?

The size of the members for most men is in the range of the average penis size. However, some boys and men may suffer from a problem called micropenis. Of course, not all small penises are micropenises.

Small penis and micropenis

Micropenis is the most commonly diagnosed disease in infants, with a penis of less than average size. The criterion for micropenis in infants is generally a penis size of less than 1,9 cm, based on the length of the stretched penis.

One of the most common complications of micropenis is decreased fertility due to reduced sperm count, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center.

An imbalance of sex hormones called hypogonadism is the main cause of micropenis.

While there are different approaches to treating micropenis, hormone therapy can be crucial in treating infants. Early testosterone administration can even help increase the penis size by 100 percent during the infant’s initial treatment cycle.

In cases where hormone treatment is not achieving the desired results, surgery may be given, or a mental health professional may be consulted, which may provide longer-term benefits.

Small penis and other disorders

The following conditions are associated with having a smaller than usual penis size.

  1. Penis plunged. A buried penis is primarily caused by an excessive build-up of skin around the penis. The penis can be buried or hidden under the abdomen, scrotum, and even the thigh. In most cases, the penis is of normal length and functions normally. However, this condition can cause difficulties in sexual arousal and functioning, as well as urinating.
  2. The penis is connected by a fold with the scrotum. The webbed penis occurs when the skin of the scrotum is attached too high to the penis. This can affect the angle at which the penis rests, making it appear “membranous” and shorter than normal. Plastic surgery is a common treatment for this condition.
  3. Trapped penis. A trapped penis can occur from circumcision that doesn’t heal properly. In this disorder, a circumcision scar causes the penis to become trapped beneath the healed skin. This condition can cause serious problems with urinary tract dysfunction, so steroid therapy or surgery is necessary.

Many of these conditions are rare, affecting a small fraction of the population. In all cases, however, it should be remembered that penis size does not necessarily determine sexual attractiveness.

Penis size is just one small item on the list of items that sexual partners find attractive – and emotional attractiveness is at the top of that list. In addition, one 2006 study found that nearly 85% of women are satisfied with their partner’s penis size.

Small penis and obesity and age

In 2015, scientists in Saudi Arabia published a study involving 778 men aged 20 to 82 attending a urology clinic.

After medically inducing an erection, researchers took measurements, finding on average:

  1. a penis length of 12,53 cm from the skin above the pubic bone to the tip of the penis;
  2. penis length 14,34 cm from the pubic bone to the tip of the penis;
  3. penis circumference of 11,50 cm.

The researchers also measured the participants’ body mass index (BMI), which increases with obesity. There was a weak correlation between higher BMI and shorter erect penile length when measured from the skin over the pubic area, but not when measured from the bone to the tip of the penis.

This suggests that the penis appears shorter when there is more fat under the skin at the base of the penis. Weight loss can often solve this problem.

The researchers also found a slight difference in size between men in their 20s and those aged 70, but the difference was less than 1 cm.

A small penis that is the cause of men’s dissatisfaction

Regardless of the actual size, many men are still dissatisfied with the size of their manhood.

A study based on the results of an online survey of more than 50 men and women found that 000% of men would like a larger penis. A report by Professor Kevan Wylie, a sexual medicine consultant at the University of Sheffield, found that excessive concerns about penis size were higher among men with medium penises than among men with small penises.

Small penis and women’s opinion

Professor Wylie’s report also showed the differences between what men and women think. A significantly higher proportion of women (85%) were satisfied with their partner’s penis size than the proportion of men (55%) who were satisfied with their own penis size.

According to Professor Wyli, the issue of attractiveness to women is complex. However, most studies suggest that penis size is much lower on the women’s priority list than issues such as a man’s personality.

Research has shown that when it comes to sex, women are much more interested in whether a man is romantic, affectionate, and sensitive to their needs and desires than what is the size of his penis.

Anyway, when it comes to penis size, in one study, 77% of women who completed the questionnaire stated that the length of the penis was invalid or completely unimportant, compared with 21% who said it was important or very important. Women who said length mattered also said girth or width also mattered.

In another survey, 45 out of 50 sexually active women in college said penis width was more important to sexual satisfaction than penis length.

In a 2015 study, 75 women were asked to indicate their penis size preferences using 3D printed models with 33 different dimensions. The models ranged from 10 to 21,6 cm in length and from 5 to 17,8 cm in circumference.

Women’s choices varied depending on the nature of the relationship they were considering.

  1. For long-term sexual partners, ladies chose a length of 16 cm and a circumference of 12,2 cm.
  2. For disposable sex partners, they chose a length of 16,3 cm and a circumference of 12,7 cm.

Overall, their desired size turned out to be slightly higher than the average found in the studies.

Small penis and homosexuality

Health experts have raised concerns about the effect of anxiety about penis size on gays. The Gay Men’s Health Project, based in Great Britain, surveyed 586 men. It found that 38% of respondents said their penis size made them anxious.

The project encourages men to seek help if they have concerns and to remember that penises come in all shapes, sizes and skin tones, just like humans.

One trusted expert suggests that the porn industry may support promoting a distorted image of the perfect penis, which creates anxiety over penis size concerns.

Small penis – penis enlargement

Hormone treatment, surgery, and other techniques can increase the size of a very small penis. However, these treatments come with certain risks, and most people do not have a penis small enough to justify choosing these methods.

Doctors usually do not recommend procedures unless the penis at rest is less than 4 cm or the length of the stretched or erect (in the spine) penis is less than 7,5 cm.

Experts highlight concerns about the number of men presenting for penis lengthening surgery. Often these people overestimate the size of the average penis.

In one study of 67 men seeking help with a small penis, none of them had penis size severely small.

According to the 2019 report, the motivation to seek treatment often focuses on self-image, concerns about one’s own imperfections, the desire to impress others, and other psychosocial factors.

A 2017 study notes that many people abandon the idea of penis enlargement once they understand the risks and possible complications of treatment.

Small penis – therapy

The therapy turns out to be a beneficial choice for men struggling with the fear of having a penis that is too small. It helps patients identify and correct any skewed views about their penis, build self-confidence, and overcome fears related to sexual relationships.

A visit to a therapist allows these men to overcome their fear of meeting a potential partner with whom they would not even dare to meet before, due to fear and conviction about their small penis.
