Sleep is an activity to which we dedicate – theoretically – as much as 1/3 of our life. Although it is still largely unexplored, we already have some knowledge about it that we can use to improve its quality
Sleep phases – what are they?
Sen is divided into two phases:
- NREM – This is a dream about slow eye movements. In this phase, delta waves of the brain’s electrical activity appear;
- REM – this is a dream about rapid eye movements. The muscles are completely relaxed. It is in this phase that we most often dream.
In phase NREM there are four stages:
- stage 1 – awareness of external stimuli decreases, slow eye movements appear in the EEG recording, alpha waves disappear and theta appear. We lie down with our eyes closed just before falling asleep, incoherent thoughts appear;
- stage 2 – it is characterized by a lack of reaction to external stimuli, the eyeballs stop moving, we do not know what is happening, but it is easy to wake up;
- stage 3 – delta waves appear which are slower than theta and this is an introduction to deep sleep;
- Stage 4 – slow wave sleep, images appear, body movements occur, and some people experience sleepwalking involuntarily. Stage 4 alternates with the REM phase.
do NREM takes about 80-100 minutes, followed by about a quarter of an hour do REM(eyeball movement phase), characterized by a slack body and the simultaneous appearance of vivid images of sleep. Then it is also easiest to wake up.

In adults, the cycle is repeated 4-5 times. It is different for infants. Each phase takes roughly half the time you fully sleep. Transition between NREM and REM takes about 60 minutes and is usually the time when your little one wakes up. The situation stabilizes from the 6th week of life – you can notice a significant increase in sleep time at night, while reducing the amount of sleep during the day. From the 5th month of life, the baby should sleep uninterruptedly throughout the night or with infrequent breaks.

Sleep phase disturbance
Sleep phase disturbance can occur as a result of many circumstances. Long-term disorders affect the quality of life and well-being. In the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10, the G47 code is intended for circumstances that have a negative impact on sleep phases. Those are:
- rapid sleep phase syndrome – incompatibility of the body’s circadian rhythm with the rhythm of sleep, usually occurs in elderly people; people with this condition go to bed very early (19-21), and wake up between 3 and 5 am and are already asleep;
- delayed sleep phase syndrome – unlike in the accelerated phase syndrome, sleep occurs late at night (between 2 and 6), and waking up between 10 and 13;
- Sudden time zone change syndrome – occurs primarily in people who move between time zones, both at a shorter and longer distance. It manifests with discomfort, fatigue, decreased concentration and headaches; it can also lead to disturbances in the digestive system.
For tired, stressed and sleepy people, we recommend RestMe Health Labs – when you have sleep problems. You can currently buy the supplement at a promotional price on Medonet Market.
If we find problems with falling asleep and sleep quality, we can try to solve them using home remedies. One of the most popular, effective and, at the same time, safe are recordings that help you fall asleep and improve the quality of sleep.
Restful sleep is important, so it is advisable to eliminate all factors that may disturb it. An effective solution may be appropriately selected supplementation, supporting restful sleep.
