In Latin, the name of the herb sounds like Aegopodium podagraria, which means “gouty goat’s foot” and, apparently, indicates the use of gout as a cure for gout. For consumption, fresh leaves, young petioles and stems of the plant are mainly harvested. Goutweed leaves are juicy, have a neutral grassy flavor and a rough texture that softens when cooked.

Endocrinologist, candidate of medical sciences Yulia Shishkova draws attention to the fact that the chemical composition of goutweed has not been studied very well. It is known for certain about the large amount of vitamin C in goutweed – 37 mg per 100 g of product. Moreover, the specialist notes that by autumn the concentration of the vitamin increases. Sometimes its content in the plant reaches 60-100 mg. Among other important trace elements, the endocrinologist identifies:

  • iron – up to 16 mg;
  • calcium – about 90 mg, which covers the daily requirement of an adult;
  • potassium – about 500 mg.

“Among other things, gout contains dietary fiber, malic and citric acids, choline, beta-carotene, bioflavonoids, coumarins, mineral salts and essential oils,” adds Yulia Shishkova.

The plant extract increased the survival rate of animals, prevented the development of anuria and normalized partial kidney functions. It can be assumed that a similar beneficial effect can be exerted on people.

Another study by the same group of scientists showed that the gout extract has anti-diabetic properties, normalizes the lipid composition of the liver and, together with other substances, affects glucose metabolism (2).
