Skin: the most interesting facts

We literally have nothing closer than our own skin. But how well do we know her? As a test of knowledge, we offer an article about interesting facts related to the skin.

Interesting facts about the skin

Did you know that…

1| Skin is our largest organ

If we imagine the skin in the form of a flap, then its area will be about two square meters. Moreover, the thickness can vary from 2 mm to a whole centimeter (for example, in the area of very hardened feet).

2| She weighs more than a skeleton

The weight of such a large organ significantly exceeds the weight of the human skeleton. We are talking about the skin in a “complete set”: epidermis plus dermis plus subcutaneous fat. Yes, yes, the very storage of nasty excess fat.

Surprised? By the way, wrinkling your forehead, squinting, opening your mouth too wide and touching your face with your hands are habits that are best abandoned.

The skin is the first to take revenge for unreasonable weight loss. Firstly, with a sharp loss of fat, it simply sags. And secondly, she becomes lethargic and wrinkled beyond her age, showing with her whole appearance that starvation diets do not suit her.

3| The skin is a complex system

Some big numbers: each square centimeter of skin is approximately:

  • 3 million cells;

  • about 100 sweat glands;

  • pieces 15 sebaceous glands;

  • the same number of hairs (after all, the sebaceous gland is almost always associated with the hair);

  • about a meter of blood vessels.

4| Microorganisms live on it.

For every human cell, there is an average of at least one, and even 2-3 microbiome cells. Life on the planet “skin” just boils. It is inhabited by approximately 500 species of microorganisms, which in a certain sense have become part of the skin – they perform a number of important functions, interact with the cells of the epidermis.

In total, the length of human blood vessels is twice the height of Everest! In people with thin and sensitive skin, the vessels can show through, forming an excessive blush and mesh on the face.

Checking skin sensitivity with tickling is a lot of fun. Haven’t tried in a while?

5| The skin protects us with all its might…

The skin is the main human shield, although it is covered with only the thinnest hydrolipidic film. Among the main functions of the skin are not only barrier and protective, but also receptor. That is why the skin is very often the first to “present” us with an allergic reaction – it signals a “hostile” component in the environment. As a boundary with the outside world, the skin regulates temperature and protects the internal organs. When we have a high temperature, we sweat and the skin acts as a cooling system.

6| …and may even save our lives

Sweating is not only a matter of removing excess heat. We sweat intensely in response to acute stress. This is a kind of additional lubricant for the feet and hands to run faster or cling to branches, escaping from the enemy.

At this moment, the skin also works, no less intensively than the muscles.

The skin secretes up to half a liter of sweat daily. It is curious that sweat itself is odorless, it is “activated” by bacteria. They feel especially good in secluded spaces – under the armpits or on the feet covered with shoes.

7| Skin has feelings!

The skin is the largest and perhaps the most mysterious human sense organ responsible for touch. And when we say: I feel with my skin, meaning not only tickling or touching, we do not exaggerate at all. On each square centimeter of the skin of the body and face, on average, there are more than 2000 nerve endings, and the entire skin is divided into so-called dermatomes associated with one or another part of the spinal cord, which determines their sensitivity.

About the update

It only seems to us that we do not shed our skin like snakes. Every 28 days, the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, completely changes. This is exactly what the cell cycle is.

Keratinocyte is the main cell of the epidermis, which originates in its basal layer and makes its way up all its short life, to then become a scale of the stratum corneum and peel off.

Over the years, this process is inhibited, so peeling is required on a regular basis in anti-aging care. By the way, a significant proportion of house dust is precisely the flakes of the stratum corneum – our shed skin.

About washing

The most basic and paradoxical occupation. Of course, you need to wash your face in the mornings and evenings, especially if you live in a dusty city. However, every time we wash ourselves, we remove sebum from the surface of the skin – a protective film, which we subsequently have to actively restore with the help of cosmetics.

Today we have to actively intervene in the purification process. The main thing in washing is to choose a product according to the type of skin. Well, a tonic to complete the cleansing procedure.

Everyone knows that cosmetics are chosen in accordance with the type of skin and the expected result: moisturizing, anti-aging effect, nutrition, antioxidant protection. But one of the most important criteria, which does not depend on skin type or age, is pleasure.

The scent, the texture, the feel on the skin – everything should be to your liking. Only then will the effect of care be complete.
