The COVID-19 epidemic continues. The government, however, decided to partially unfreeze the economy. From February 12, they can resume their activities, incl. open sports facilities, including ski slopes. This certainly makes skiing amateurs happy, but we must always remember to maintain the sanitary regime. We advise on how to stay safe on the slopes and reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.

Ski slopes reopened

– We allow sports activity in open areas. From February 12, it will be possible to practice amateur sports outdoors while maintaining the sanitary regime, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a press conference on February 5. The provisions concern, inter alia, ski slopes. The new restrictions were introduced conditionally for two weeks. If there is an increase in infections, the sports facility may be closed again.

  1. Easing of restrictions. What will change from February 12?

A face mask is needed more than ever

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is spread by droplets, i.e. we can get infected when someone nearby sneezes, coughs or talks loudly (saliva droplets). To prevent this from happening, we wear face masks or other mouth and nose protectors that keep some of the secretions and reduce the risk of spreading the infection. When driving, a face mask is not required due to the distance between riders, but in common areas, in the queue to the lift or while resting, it is better to cover the mouth and nose, and also to be among people who also do it.

Protective masks are designed to protect others from infection on our part. Therefore, it is better to avoid people who are close to us, but do not cover their mouth and nose.

Better to hang out outside

“The biggest danger to skiers is not the skiing itself,” says Brent Russell, the emergency room physician who has contracted COVID-19. According to him, the risk is staying in closed rooms together, especially while eating. Then we take off the masks. Russell advises eating outside or going back to your apartment at all.

Plan your trip so that you use confined spaces as little as possible, e.g. for warming yourself or just for the purpose of eating a meal.

Keep your distance on the lifts

In the queue to the ski lift and while going up, try to keep at least 2 m away from others. “Ideally, people would only ride the chairlifts with people in their own group,” says Russell. This may be difficult to do, but not impossible. Keeping your distance and wearing face masks significantly reduces the risk of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection, so it’s worth making the effort.

To sum up: keeping your distance, wearing face masks, being outside – these activities can reduce the risk of spreading the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. However, they will not eliminate it completely. In the event of symptoms of infection (not only COVID-19 but any other), it is recommended to stay at home and consult a doctor. Take care of yourself and others.
