Six educational activities that will introduce your child to nature.
Summer’s soon. The time when we get a little closer to nature, especially children. They love to explore everything, look at bugs, collect rocks and build insect houses.
This is a great time to educate young naturalists about nature. This can be done with the help of books. For example, the world-famous art books about nature by Dianna Aston, which were published by the publishing house “MYTH”.
The series includes 6 books with beautiful detailed illustrations and informative texts. Each of them covers one topic: butterflies, beetles, nests, seeds, eggs and stones.
Books help to present information in an easy and entertaining way, they are bright and beautiful, so they really like children. And you can also arrange developmental classes on them. We offer 6 ideas right now.
Nest layout: idea from the book “It’s So Noisy in the Nest”
Make models of interesting nests, for example, a nest in a pot with a cactus, among its thorns, like a cactus wren (small bird), from stones, like lampreys – small aquatic animals that look like eels (they build nests from stones in a small depression at the bottom of the lake or a river), from paper, like wasps and hornets (make it look like a beehive), from a large pile of leaves and branches, like a jungle chicken (the pile should be large, because this bird builds nests up to 5 meters high, so it saves eggs from predators) …
The structure of the beetle: an idea from the book “The beetle is always careful”
Find pest beetles and useful beetles at the dacha. Catch, for example, a Colorado potato beetle in a jar, examine the structure of its body, show all the parts to the child. Tell your child how beetles are different from regular insects. Their front pair of wings has evolved into rigid elytra that protect delicate flying wings from the sun, rain, and hungry predators.
How a butterfly appears: an idea from the book “The butterfly is in no hurry”
In summer, try to find a butterfly pupa. Describe to the child all the stages of insect development, tell that the pupa is an intermediate stage between the egg and the butterfly. Explain how the body of a butterfly develops inside the cocoon (wings, antennae, proboscis grow in it, and a butterfly is born on the 45th day after the appearance of the egg).
What does a seed consist of: an idea from the book “What does a seed dream of?”
Take a larger seed and explain to the child what it consists of and how an embryo is formed from it, and then a plant. Show the children that there are many interesting things hiding under the shell (seed skin).
How the chicken appears: idea from the book “The Egg Loves Silence”
All children want to know how a chicken emerges from an egg. Take a chicken egg and use this diagram to tell your child what it is made of. Explain that the shell is the house for the embryo, the yolk is its food, the white is the feather bed and pillow, and that the shell has pores in order for the embryo to breathe.
Show the children how different embryos mature: chicken, salmon, and grasshopper.
What stones are made of: an idea from the book “A stone has its own history”
Tell your child about beautiful and unusual stones that are difficult to find in the city or on the beach, such as calcite, sodalite, azurite, pyrite, lapis lazuli. Show each of these stones and explain that they are all composed of minerals. Just like the baking dough is made of flour, butter, eggs and sugar, the stone includes various ingredients: feldspar, quartz, fluorite, gypsum, pyrite, which are composed of chemical elements.
Exploring nature is a vibrant and exciting experience for children of all ages. Give your child the joy of discovery with
