A team of gynecologists from the Hospital in Klinach in Krakow performed six gynecological oncological surgeries with the support of two da Vinci robots within 12 hours. Free help was provided to patients from Poland and Ukraine suffering from endometrial and cervical cancer. All the ladies are doing well. The treatments were performed as part of a financial program financed by the European Union. The event was part of the program of the scientific conference “Robotics in gynecological oncology”.
The Krakow hospital is a precursor in robotic surgery in the field of oncological gynecology in Poland. So far, nearly 100 women aged 25 – 85 have benefited from gynecological procedures at NEO Hospital. Da Vinci procedures in the field of gynecology in Poland do not have dedicated financing under the National Health Fund, they are available mainly privately, and the cost of a robotic procedure is often a barrier for women to access minimally invasive surgery. However, thanks to the initiative of the women’s hospital management and subsidies from the European Union, patients suffering from endometrial and cervical cancer from all over Poland, as well as from abroad, including Ukraine, can use these modern treatments free of charge. The value of co-financing from European funds is PLN 7,3 million.

– In our hospital, we can perform about 10 free surgeries each month. Commercially, such a procedure costs about 40 thousand. zlotys. That is why we are all the more pleased that the grant we have received will last us for gynecological surgeries until mid-2023. I am extremely proud of our wonderful gynecological team, which today fought for the health and quality of life of six 6 patients from Poland and Ukraine, performing complex endometrial and cervical cancer treatments within 12 hours, including trachelectomy with the support of da Vinci robots – says Joanna Szyman, president of the Neo Hospital Group, which includes the Krakow Hospital in Klinach.
The growing demand of cancer patients for minimally invasive procedures also creates the need to increase access to professional training and knowledge in the field of robotic surgery. That is why the hospital organized a unique Case observation for doctors who could participate in surgical procedures using two da Vinci robots. There was also a robotic surgery course for operating nurses at the hospital. 6 women took advantage of the program and obtained certificates entitling them to work with the da Vinci system.
The event was to present the knowledge on the use of new technologies in the treatment of endometrial and cervical cancer. – The use of robotic techniques in the XNUMXst century is a standard of conduct in all operating rooms in the world, as well as in Poland. Therefore, the European Society of Oncological Gynecology (ESGO) recommends the use of these techniques, among others in the case of endometrial cancer. It is a parallel recommendation and just as important as the use of laparoscopic techniques or open surgery. Of course, research is ongoing to expand the scope of the da Vinci robot’s use in gynecology. Congratulations to the medical team and the management of NEO Hospital for an impressive development. Particularly noteworthy is the use of the da Vinci robot in trachelectomy procedures in patients with cervical cancer. Such procedures are performed only in a few hospitals in Europe.
In Poland, NEO Hospital is the first such center. – For patients with invasive cervical cancer with a tumor diameter of ≤2 cm, the trachelectomy procedure allows to preserve fertility and, consequently, the birth of a child – says prof. dr hab. n. med. Paweł Knapp Member of the Board of the European Society of Oncological Gynecology (ESGO).
