Sitting high: what furniture to choose for the balcony

It is so nice to go out to the balcony early in the morning, taking a cup of coffee with you, or to sit in a cozy armchair with an interesting book overlooking the courtyard buried in greenery. However, those who did not have such an opportunity, until recently, were not particularly worried.

The self-isolation regime, which lasted almost three months, forced us to reconsider our views on these square meters. True, in most cases, the balcony or loggia looked more like a kind of warehouse of unnecessary things, rather than a place where it is really pleasant to spend time.

And after a successful purchase, you can start arranging the patio: arrange furniture, throw soft pillows on the seats, place pots with flowering plants on the floor, or put a pot with an artificial palm tree in the corner. And the atmosphere will be complemented by garlands hanging on the railing or candles in floor candlesticks.

For open balcony outdoor furniture is suitable, the same as for terraces – it is not afraid of the sun, precipitation, or temperature extremes. The ideal choice in this case is plastic products or wicker furniture – made of artificial rattan, for example. In this case, the upholstery must be resistant to sunlight. Burnout marks will not decorate your interior. Metal furniture must be galvanized or treated with a special anti-corrosion agent. In this case, it will serve for many years and will delight your grandchildren.

For glazed, but not insulated balcony you can pick up kits both made of plastic and with metal elements. Furniture made of MDF, natural rattan or laminated chipboard is also suitable.

For insulated and combined loggias there are practically no restrictions on the choice of materials for furniture. Although it is better to give preference to items made of natural wood. Indeed, in a confined space, a person becomes especially sensitive to allergens and fungal spores.

Size matters. Even if you like noisy parties, it’s not worth squeezing a huge sofa onto a small balcony or loggia so that all your friends can fit. Firstly, it will be very difficult to move around the balcony. A gap of at least 50 cm should remain between the walls and pieces of furniture. Secondly, bulky furniture may simply not pass through the narrow opening of the balcony door.

The table is the king of the balcony… Whatever one may say, but without him in any way. Compact hanging tables do not take up much space. In addition, they can be removed or moved to another place at any time. They are attached to the balcony lattice and can be of a variety of designs: from an ordinary overhead shelf on the railing to folding tables with a box-stand for plants. Small coffee tables with a glass top and a wrought-iron frame also do not take up much space and look very advantageous. Sitting at this is a pleasure: as if you were in a street cafe in a European town. Another ideal option is a book table. It is better to choose models with additional storage boxes.

Chairs are best matched to the table. This will not create a feeling of clutter in the balcony. A brightly colored pillow can be thrown over a metal or wooden seat to make it less rigid. Folding chairs are more convenient when it comes to a compact balcony. Experienced “balcony experts” advise to pay attention to the distance between the legs: if it expands downward, you will cling to them every now and then. If there is a wide window sill, you can supplement it with a couple of bar stools.

The armchair will perfectly fit into the space of a large and wide balcony. If you choose a folding model, then on warm summer nights you can equip an extra bed here – for guests or for yourself. For small balconies, it is better to choose bean bag chairs or cocoon chairs. They weigh a little, and you don’t need a lot of space for them. For open balconies, models made of waterproof fabric are suitable. Do you like to sit with a book in the evenings? For a leisurely rest, pick up a compact rocking chair. Well, if you are planning to equip a solarium, pay attention to a chaise lounge with a retractable footrest and a comfortable headrest.

The sofa on the balcony also has the right to life.… A sofa bench is a great solution for narrow spaces. It can be placed along a long wall, saving precious inches to move. The under-seat sofa, as the name suggests, has a roomy sideboard. It is very convenient if, in addition to the patio, you also want to have a storage area on the balcony. Corner sofas are chosen by the owners of wide balconies and loggias.
