Single mother status: how and where to get documents

Not all women raising a child on their own have single mother status. This category is provided by the state with a number of benefits. To understand whether you can count on them, you need to understand the meaning of this concept, and what documents confirm it.

How to get status and is it possible to lose it

An unmarried woman who has given birth to a child whose paternity was not established during registration by both parents filing an application or a court decision, or adopting a baby, is considered a single mother. In this case, instead of the father’s name, a dash is put in the birth certificate, or the data is entered from the mother’s words, about which a mark is made. This status is assigned to a married or divorced woman if paternity has been contested in court and an appropriate decision has been made.

Being a single mother allows you to enjoy a number of benefits

In some cases, even a mother who takes care of a child on her own is not considered lonely:

  • If the father is deprived of parental rights.
  • In case of divorce, even when a man avoids alimony.
  • In the event of the death of the father.
  • When a baby is born before the expiration of 300 days after the divorce or death of the spouse.
  • If paternity has been established voluntarily or through a court.

This status is retained if the mother gets married, but is removed when the child is adopted by the new spouse. The reason for its cancellation is the woman’s submission of false information.

What documents are submitted for its assignment

In order for a woman to be recognized as a single mother, after the birth of a baby, you should contact the department of social protection of the population at the place of registration. The basis for assigning the status is the mother’s application and the following documents, which are submitted together with copies:

  • birth certificate;
  • mother’s passport and work book;
  • a certificate from the housing office, which confirms the cohabitation of the child with the woman;
  • confirmation of income for the last quarter;
  • certificate from the registry office in form 25, if the father’s name is written down from the mother’s words.

Within a month, the issue should be considered and the decision should be sent to the woman by mail. You can reapply, but you will have to pay a state fee in the amount of 200 rubles.

A single mother does not have a special certificate, her rights are confirmed by a birth certificate and a certificate from the registry office. She can count on receiving financial assistance, obtaining additional leave, and increasing the tax deduction. This status gives some privileges that differ by region. They relate to the registration of a child in kindergarten, preferential payment in schools.

A woman raising a child on her own has many difficulties, since she must solve all problems herself. For her, any state aid becomes important, which can only be obtained if she is officially recognized as a single mother.
