History of the Singapore Sling
The Singapore sling cocktail, unlike many other cocktails named after a city or country, actually comes from Singapore, a city-state in southeast Asia.
This city has long served as a transit point for the US Army during the fighting in Vietnam. Then this cocktail was invented.
“Sling” means “commander” in the local dialect. So bartenders and waiters of Singaporean establishments called American officers who visited bars, waiting for their ship or plane.
The cocktail recipe came up with a resourceful bartender of one of these establishments for a young Yankee officer who wanted to surprise his girlfriend with something.
Soon, Singapore sling became a real discovery, and it began to be served not only in tourist establishments, but also in simpler bars where local alcohol lovers gathered.
The reason for the popularity of the cocktail is simple: this drink was not like any of the cocktails that existed then, and its light taste and low strength allowed almost everyone to drink it.
Today Singapore sling is one of the hallmarks of Singapore, and travel agencies include it in the list of things to try when visiting this country.
