Signs of anorexia in a girl
We are used to attributing malaise and weakness to the dynamic rhythm of life, stress and constant lack of time. But often these signs do not indicate fatigue and the need to take a break and rest. These symptoms can be the primary manifestation of anorexia nervosa! Physician Natalia Soldatova and psychologist Oksana Rodina told what symptoms should alarm and make you reconsider your usual (and as it turned out) unhealthy lifestyle.
Anorexia is a serious disease that has become, unfortunately, a fashionable disease in our time. There may be several reasons: these are modern norms, inspired by fashionable standards, and heredity, and low self-esteem, and dislike for one’s own body. The main thing is to catch anorexia at the first stage – the initial one, when alarming symptoms are just beginning to appear. The next – anorectic, already implies anorexia nervosa with subsequent somatic disorders requiring a shock dose of hormone therapy. The latter – cachectic – already poses a mortal threat to humans. The body is completely depleted, all fat reserves are already wasted, muscle degeneration begins, arthritis progresses. In this case, the person needs urgent hospitalization. The stage of relapse is also distinguished. Usually at risk are people who have passed all three stages and have been safely cured of the disease. Therefore, a person who has gone through the rehabilitation period must be under the constant supervision of a doctor.
Oksana Rodina, psychologist: “With anorexia, both insomnia and, conversely, longer sleep can occur. These manifestations are associated with a malfunction of the nervous system: the body is in a panic, because it does not receive proper nutrition and draws all its internal strength. Pay attention to your own condition. If you find it difficult to concentrate, you cannot assimilate new material, your working capacity has decreased and fatigue has increased, then you need not just a vacation, but good nutrition. These emotional states make you think about solitude, and you avoid social events. You should not justify your own behavior by saying that you are an introvert and simply do not like noisy companies. You not only lose your taste for food, but also for life in general. Do not ignore breakfast – it is he who provides the foundation for the whole day. In the morning you can eat absolutely everything, as in the morning hours the gastrointestinal tract is fully functional. A fragrant cup of coffee, delicious scrambled eggs, your favorite jelly donut – a great charge for the positive. “
You are not worried about the feeling of hunger
Oksana Rodina, psychologist: “You proudly tell your friends that you only drank a couple of cups of coffee all day, and they sigh sympathetically and enviously. Here, they say, what willpower. If a cup of coffee a day is enough for you, this is a wake-up call. And it’s even more alarming when you’re not drinking any more liquids other than coffee. Lack of appetite and, therefore, hunger for a long period are already signs of primary anorexia. The big problem with timely treatment of anorexia nervosa is that the person completely denies it exists.
Natalia Soldatova, therapist: “Amenorrhea is a violation of the cycle or complete absence of menstruation for a long time and one of the constant signs of anorexia nervosa. Pathology is caused by a disruption of the endocrine system of the female body. The symptoms of amenorrhea are similar to those of menopause: the same mood swings, the so-called hot flashes and sweating. During treatment, hormone therapy is used to restore the endocrine system. “
Oksana Rodina, psychologist: “You will be surprised, but sometimes anorexia does not imply physical weakness. If you have made a habit of exhausting yourself on simulators for every piece of bun you eat, then it’s time to sound the alarm. You already perceive training as a punishment for food! Everything should be in moderation – even professional athletes give time to relax the muscles and the body as a whole. Three times a week, one hour of exercise is the optimal load for the body. “
Natalia Soldatova, therapist: “Cold hands and feet, often feeling cold, are all signs of poor circulation. Add to the list of unpleasant consequences of anorexia a malfunction of the cardiovascular system: arrhythmia, bradycardia, hypotension (constant low blood pressure). “
Hair began to fall out, and nails became fragile
Natalia Soldatova, therapist: “Of course, everything can be attributed to a lack of vitamins, but think about why your body does not receive these vitamins. Restriction in food (as well as strict diets and mono-diets) lead to a deterioration in the condition of not only hair and nails, but also the skin. Lack of calcium can even lead to tooth loss. A grayish skin color, a puffy face, cyanosis, sparse hair – such a “beautiful” picture emerges! Due to the lack of vital microelements, bone fragility increases, the healing process of even small wounds slows down, joints swell, there is a risk of developing an inflammatory joint disease – arthritis ”.

How many times a day do you eat?
How everyone should eat: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Can’t work on an empty stomach!
For the most part, these are snacks. It’s a pity, but I don’t remember the taste of homemade soup anymore.
I eat when I have time. Sometimes and once a day – usually a late dinner
I don’t count any food intake or calories. I eat when I want!
