Signs associated with speaking: mothers and childcare professionals testify

Sign language for babies: parenting enthusiasts testify

“I started gestural communication with my daughter when she was 9 months old. I started out with everyday signs: “eat“,”to drink“,”cake“And”bath“. After a month, she made her first “cake” sign. I felt great joy, I was communicating with my daughter! It was the first time that I felt like I was in real contact with her. Since then, she has known about twenty signs that allow us to communicate and understand each other. Her favorite signs: candy and chocolate ! ”

Karine, mother of Kayla, 22 months

“William was just 12 months old when we went with his dad and took him to a sign language class. It was a real asset because I speak English to him and his daddy French. The signs made it possible to make the link between the two languages and he quickly understood the association. William started signing at 14 months old. He was thus able to make himself understood by all his entourage very early on (parents, nanny, grandparents) and we did not have to go through the phase of frustration of the child’s not understanding. ”

Julie, mother of William, 22 months

“I went to a sign lessons for babies because it seemed like an interesting idea to implement with the children that I welcome on a daily basis. I was babysitting a little boy and an 8 month old girl. I integrated every day 3 or 4 simple gestures and natural (eating, drinking, sleeping …) and stuck to them until we understood each other. The little girl started signing 4-5 months later. I then added other signs and our communication grew. His parents were delighted. Today, at 20 months, she uses signs when the sounds she makes are not enough. To know also that it has no delay compared to the verbalization. For the record, I was really very proud the day when, shortly after starting to sign, she came to see me by making the signs of the cat and the sleep and brought me in the room to show me the cat sleeping on the bed, without ever having signed it myself, she had actually signed a sentence! ”

Blandine, maternal assistant, 30 years old

“I took part in a sign language workshop, and it’s really awesome! My daughter made her first signs around 10-11 months, she signed “again” and “cake” and obviously “suck”, and she pronounced at the same time. It was a magical moment ! In fact, the signs taught him the words at the same time. She was very proud of herself. Today, she is 21 months old and continues to learn new signs! ”

“I attended 5“ baby signs ”workshops, from February to May. It’s a magical moment. My little stopper who is 14 months old now knows how to make himself understood when he wants “more” either a bottle of milk or water. He is not frustrated because we understand it. It’s a great method. ”
