Hello! A split personality disorder, or, as it is also called, a dissociative disorder, is a mental disorder in which one person can have several personalities at once, moreover, with completely opposite character traits and even gender. And sometimes their number reaches 10, but these are already very difficult cases.
What is split personality
A person suffering from this mental disorder does not realize that the process of changing personalities in him is abnormal. Yes, and this happens with a certain frequency, or at times when the strength of one of them is required.
For example, a person can be completely weak-willed and soft, but in situations where self-defense is required, a cruel and aggressive man wakes up in him, for example, who does not allow offenders to harm himself, saving in this way. But such a change is not the main one, there are certain signs by which it is quite realistic to track and diagnose a dissociative disorder.
Evidence
- Excessive sweating.
- Emotional instability and imbalance. Such an individual is not able to control himself. For example, he is sad and crying, and after a couple of minutes, for no particular reason, he begins to laugh.
- Loss of some information. For example, not being able to remember what happened when his other incarnation appeared, all events that are not related to the period when he has control are blocked.
- Frequent headaches or migraines that last for a long time and nothing helps.
- Sometimes there is a speech disorder, that is, a person gives some incoherent and awkward answers, some words are completely incomprehensible, up to the appearance of inarticulate sounds. Stuttering and long pauses are also often observed.
- He ceases to feel his body, control movements.
- Beliefs, goals and worldview in general may be missing.
- Loss in space, does not understand how he ended up in some place or does not recognize him.
- Actions can be completely contradictory, especially in relation to words.
- Hallucinations, both visual and auditory. They are the main symptoms of this disease. That is, the connection with reality is most often absent.
- As for children, you should be very careful. The first bells are: sudden mood swings, unbalanced and unstable behavior, nutritional difficulties, tastes change too often, or simply suddenly refuses to eat. Constant unreasonable fears, up to the fact that anxiety is present almost around the clock. Cruelty, both towards other people, animals, and towards oneself, that is, can harm and injure one’s body.
Causes of appearance
- Dissociative disorder can be temporary in case of brain damage that occurs during accidents, fights and other situations. Prolonged lack of adequate sleep can also affect.
- An increased level of stress that the psyche is unable to cope with. Especially if it was long and intense. This happens when a person finds himself in abnormal conditions, for example, in a war, or becomes a victim of a maniac, a rapist. Also in case of being in the epicenter of natural disasters, catastrophes and terrorist attacks.
- Lack of attention and love in infancy. The newborn is experiencing severe anxiety, because he does not feel safe, his needs are not met, and this all provokes the emergence of mental illness, among which is splitting into several personalities.
- With a strong immersion, a merger that occurs while watching a movie or reading a book. Then the fictional turns into the real, as if the boundaries are erased, and the person is no longer able to distinguish what is his life and what is just a game.
- Sometimes occurs after surgery, in particular anesthesia. For example, after receiving nitric oxide, which is administered during dental operations.
- genetic disposition.
- Religious sects, fanatical beliefs also lead to a similar disease.
Treatment
The healing process usually takes a lot of time, resources and effort. Sometimes it even lasts a lifetime. But it is necessary to at least alleviate the suffering of the patient, and reduce the intensity of the symptoms. Treatment is prescribed only by the decision of the doctor. Below is some background information for your reference.
Medication
- Antipsychotics. They help to stop the disease a little, removing, for example, a manic state or hallucinations, delirium. They include haloperedol, azaleptin and sonapax. They reduce anxiety, arousal, relax and help you fall asleep.
- Tranquilizers. It is strictly forbidden to use other than prescribed by a doctor, as in some cases they can only aggravate the condition. Especially if there is a tendency to suicide.
- Antidepressants. They help when it is necessary to cope with apathy, depression, in the absence of desires, interests and, in general, energy.
Non-drug, that is, psychotherapeutic treatment involves the use of:
Hypnosis
With its help, it is possible to achieve considerable results regarding the general condition of the patient, as his character changes, and some symptoms disappear. But, at the same time, it is dangerous, because, on the contrary, it can provoke the emergence of new incarnations that will control and manage the unfortunate.
Typically, hypnosis is used to reduce anxiety, create rapport between patient and therapist, and reinforce the position of the main alter ego.
Electroconvulsive therapy
It was originally invented and introduced for the treatment of schizophrenia, and appeared in the 1930s. It was believed that the brain of a person with a mental disorder is unable to create certain impulses, which is why they should be created artificially.
It happens like this: several electrodes are attached to the head and a voltage is applied through them, not very high, in order to only affect the patient’s brain for a fraction of a second, and not damage it. Repeating it several times a week, for a couple of months, doctors achieved quite positive results.
Psychotherapy
And both individually with the patient, and group, with his family. Surrounding people sometimes do not track how they contribute to the maintenance of mental illness, and addictions in general.
Therefore, it is necessary to correct their ways of dealing with each other, building relationships. But in individual therapy, it is important to help build your own clear beliefs, stereotypes, values, opinions, and so on. Roughly speaking, to return to a person power over his life.
Interesting case
In the years 1920-1930 in Germany, a patient named Dieter was in the Charité clinic. He was in treatment for almost seven years due to the fact that he had no control over his body. He had only partial control over breathing and speech. Everything else was run by Peter, who was a very nasty type.
He did not communicate with anyone, but he spoiled Dieter’s life thoroughly. The attending physician claimed that it was not easy to be near him, as there was a lot of sadness and surprise from the fact that, listening to the patient’s clear and reasonably reasonable speech, he noticed a lot of fatigue and suffering in intonation.
For example, while Peter smashed his head against the wall, or scattered feces, masturbated in front of the medical staff, Dieter apologized nonstop and begged for a straitjacket so that all this would stop as soon as possible.
Once it turned out that he was alone for some time, without proper supervision. Doctors found the unfortunate man choking on water from the sink, which he specially scored with a piece of sheet. It is impossible to imagine all the horror that he experienced before his death, because in fact, this is a murder, someone unknown took and forced him to lower his head into the sink and keep it there until he stops breathing.
