Sidecar – a cocktail for motorcycle passengers

Sidecar is a classic sour with a well balanced taste. Translated from English, the word “Sidecar” is a motorcycle sidecar for transporting passengers. How she relates to the cocktail, I will tell further.

Historical reference. The right to authorship of the Sidecar recipe is disputed by Paris and London. According to the most plausible legend, the cocktail was invented by the bartender of the Ritz Hotel in Paris especially for his guest – an officer who took part in the First World War. The brave warrior came with a driver, sitting in a motorcycle sidecar, hence the name.

According to another version, around the same time, the London bartender Pat McGarry, who worked at the Bucks Club, invented the recipe. And the name came from a special container for draining the remnants of cocktails, which is called “Sidecar” in bartending jargon. But none of the hypotheses are supported by facts.

The first written memories of the cocktail appeared only in 1922, and in two collections for bartenders at once. Nowadays, Sidecar is considered one of the best cognac cocktails for men.

Classic sidecar recipe

Composition and proportions:

  • cognac – 50 ml;
  • orange liqueur – 20 ml;
  • lemon juice – 20 ml;
  • sugar – 10 grams (optional);
  • ice cubes – 100 grams.

Cognac must be of high quality, cheap domestic brandies spoil the cocktail. Use Cointreau or Triple Sec orange liqueur, other brands distort the taste. Only freshly squeezed lemon juice is suitable without additives and preservatives; it cannot be replaced with lime.

Preparation

1. Make a sugar border on the glass by wetting the edges in lemon juice and dipping them in sugar (optional). With the edge, the cocktail becomes sweeter.

2. Mix cognac, liqueur, juice and ice in a shaker.

3. Pour the finished Sidecar through a strainer (strainer) into a glass.
