Like all vaccines, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine can have side effects. I am talking about the so-called vaccination reactions, which may occur in response to the activity of the immune system. Which side effects are the most common?
- The vaccine reaction is the body’s reaction to the vaccine being given. It may or may not occur after administration of the preparation. Information on the frequency of vaccine reactions is provided in the vaccine package insert
- In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine by Pfizer, the most common reactions are pain at the injection site, headache, muscle and joint pain

Side effects of the vaccine on COVID-19
The administration of the vaccine causes a reaction of the immune system – antibodies and immune cells are produced. In some cases, the reaction of the immune system may be associated with the so-called vaccine reactions or otherwise – side effects of the vaccine. Likewise, the COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 developed by Pfizer.
As the manufacturer assures, most side effects are mild or moderate and disappear within a few days of onset. If the side effects, such as pain or elevated temperature, are bothersome, you can take painkillers or antipyretics based on paracetamol.
The most common side effects, which is the kind that may affect more than 1 in 10 people, are:
- pain at the injection site
- fatigue
- headache
- muscle aches
- arthralgia
- chills
- fever
Often (less than 1 in 10 people), side effects may also occur:
- swelling at the injection site
- redness at the injection site
- nausea
The least common (fewer than 1 person in 100) may experience side effects such as enlarged lymph nodes or feeling unwell.
As indicated on the leaflet, any side effects should be reported to the doctor or nurse. This also applies to any side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report your ailments via the website or the MHRA application.
Importantly, the occurrence of post-vaccination reactions is an individual matter. Some symptoms may or may not appear.

Post-vaccination and undesirable post-vaccination reactions
The vaccination reaction is the body’s expected reaction to the vaccine and is related to the immune system and the production of antibodies. The occurrence of post-vaccination reactions depends on the type of vaccine, its composition, and the individual response of the person to whom it was administered.
However, these are usually mild reactions such as redness or pain at the injection site.
The most characteristic post-vaccination reaction is the reaction to tuberculosis after the vaccine – after a few weeks, an infiltrate, erythema and a pus-filled lump appear at the injection site. In 95 percent. of cases, a scar remains after healing.
In turn, adverse reactions to vaccination are associated with severe reactions to vaccination that last longer than a few days, but do not pose a threat to life and do not lead to permanent damage to health.
According to the WHO, serious postvaccination reactions are adverse events related to vaccination that result in death, require hospitalization or extend the current stay in hospital, lead to a permanent decline in physical or mental performance, or be life-threatening.
