Shrub decorative viburnum gets along well with other crops. It is planted next to barberry or mountain ash. Single cultivation is also possible. Consider how to plant viburnum, how to care for it.
Planting decorative viburnum
The plant loves moisture, so plant it near bodies of water. Dry soil will work as well, but it will need to be watered regularly. Kalina loves sunlight, but its growth will not be so active, so choose a shaded area. The optimal period for planting is spring.
Proceed in this way:
- Dig a hole 60 * 60 cm and fill it with water.
- Place a drainage of stones, bark or other material on the bottom.
- Fill the pit with a peat or humus nutrient mixture.
- Pour water again.
- Make a depression in the hole and lower the seedling into it – deepen the roots by 5 cm. If there are several bushes, then plant them at a distance of 2 m from each other.
- Lay old leaves, sawdust and needles on the soil, that is, mulch.
- Water the plant.
After planting, do not water the bush for a while – the mulch will provide it with enough moisture. Tie it to a support – strong winds can break it.
The plant is unpretentious, therefore it grows quickly. Don’t worry about it dying in the winter. Viburnum is frost-resistant and does not need to be covered.
Caring for decorative viburnum
In order for the shrub to grow intensively, it needs care. It consists in the following:
- Watering. In summer and early fall, water the bush as often as possible. Pour water into the soil around the roots. If the viburnum has enough moisture, then its flowers will be large. If they are small, this means the plant needs moisture.
- Top dressing. Feed the shrub with nitrogen fertilizer for the first time 2 years after planting. in the spring. If during planting the seedling the fertilizing was applied correctly in the soil, then it will be enough for these 2 years. Carry out the second feeding with potassium-phosphorus fertilizer in the fall.
- Pruning. To give the viburnum a decorative look, cut the branches to shape the shrub. Also prune dry and damaged branches. Form the crown only after the flowers have faded and buds appear. Thin branches periodically.
If more than 2 years have passed since planting, then you should not cut it – it is harmful for the shrub.
If you want to decorate your yard, plant this ornamental shrub. During the flowering period, it will amaze you with its beauty. To do this, take care of the viburnum correctly.
