Shrovetide: the meaning and traditions of each day

Very soon an ancient holiday symbolizing the farewell of winter and the meeting of spring. The celebration of the people lasts a week and ends with Forgiveness Sunday. In 2019, the celebration of Shrovetide will begin on March 4 and end on March 10. Every day of the oil week makes sense.

Monday, March 4 – the first day of Shrovetide – “meeting”

Ice slides are unfolded on this day. In the old days, it was believed that the further the sleigh rolled and the louder the laughter over the iceberg, the better the harvest. After sledding activities, of course, run to eat delicious pancakes. And on this day usually organized a stuffed animal Shrovetide and sledding.

Tuesday, March 5 – “flirting”

On this day it is customary to start fun games and treat pancakes for the fun created.

 

Wednesday, March 6 – “Gourmet”

All housewives on this day prepare various delicacies in large quantities and decorate a rich table with them. In the first place, of course, pancakes.

Thursday, March 7 – “walk”

From this day Maslenitsa unfolds to its full breadth – they walk from morning till night, lead round dances around the stuffed animal, sing songs.

Friday, March 8 – “mother-in-law’s evening”

A number of ancient customs on this day are aimed at speeding up weddings and helping young people to find a suitable couple. In the evening, the sons-in-law personally invite their mothers-in-law to visit them – they treat them to pancakes that they baked themselves.

Saturday, March 9 – “call of the call”

On this day, the young daughter-in-law invites her family to her. It’s her turn to show off her own pancakes. And on this day burn the stuffed animal Shrovetide, which symbolizes the departure of winter and the arrival of spring.

Sunday, March 10 – “Forgiven Sunday”

On this day, it is customary to apologize to all loved ones and offended for the evil caused, for some of their misdeeds. This is a very bright day before Lent.

From March 11, the festivities will cease, as Lent comes into force, which will last until April 27 – Easter. 

Interesting to know

Previously, Shrovetide was called Komoiditsa. “Kom” – a bear that woke up after hibernation in early spring, and people gave him pancakes as a sacrifice. This is where the phrase “the first pancake lump” came from.
