Short stories from life: about people and animals

😉 Greetings to the guests of the site and regular readers! Friends, I hope you enjoy these short life stories. Two short stories: “In the company with a bear” and “Bird’s revenge”.

In the company of the bear

This story took place in one of the taiga villages where I then worked as a geologist. In other words, we are not talking about geology, but about a berry – raspberry.

One evening I went to a nearby gully to pick raspberries. The harvest that year was a success – there were incredibly many berries, and I got carried away with picking. Every now and then I came across large clusters of crushed ripe berries. I, being in full confidence that someone so barbarously collected raspberries, was indignant:

– That would have got you to me!

The next moment it seemed to me that someone was sniffing nearby. Raising my head and moving the bush a little, I realized with horror that I was picking raspberries in the company of a bear! A little more – and we would have faced “face to face”!

The bear picked the berries and ate them, not paying any attention to me. Not remembering myself from fear, I began to slowly move aside and up the hill. According to the stories of experienced taiga people, the easiest way to get away from a bear is to run uphill – it seems that it is more difficult for him to run upwards than downwards.

Although later, after some time, I saw the clubfoot jumping up the mountain path so that the world champion in running was no rival to him.

I went unnoticed only because the bear was busy with berries. But the most interesting thing in this story is that I did not throw the collected raspberries out of fear, but brought them to the camp.

Bird’s revenge

This story is more than twenty years old. It all happened during the summer holidays. The neighbors’ guys and I began to play hide and seek.

One of the girls, Natasha, hid in the barn, where she saw a nest with chicks. Childhood curiosity knows no bounds – she turned over an old bucket, stood on it, reached for the nest – and accidentally broke it.

The tiny chicks immediately found themselves on the ground. Natasha screams. While everyone ran into the barn, and while they figured out what was the matter, the cat ate the chicks. Adult birds circled above us in panic.

I received a good thrashing from my parents, but the story did not end there. Some time after what happened, our only cow at that time fell ill – she began to milk herself with blood. Various veterinarians came, gave some injections, gave advice, but nothing helped.

Healer’s advice

Some of the neighbors advised me to contact a local old woman healer. She cured people and animals for all kinds of diseases, removed the evil eye and damage. The witch doctor went around the whole yard, went into the barn and said:

– The unknown disease of your cow is a bird’s revenge. We urgently need to help the birds, make a new nest for them. If they forgive you and bring out new offspring, the cow will live and will soon recover.

They brought in a ladder and started building the bird house. My father stuffed nails into the wall, wrapped it with wire, put everything that was left of the previous nest there. On the advice of the healer, the new nest was strengthened with clay.

Apparently, the birds forgave us – soon they settled in their new dwelling, brought out the chicks, after a while they flew in full with their parents. The cow recovered the next day after repairing the bird’s apartment.

After everything that happened, we started playing hide and seek only in the yard, we didn’t look into the barn anymore, so as not to frighten the birds living there. By the way, the nest hangs to this day. And every year someone lives in it.
