By nature, he was cheerful and sociable, fluent in eight languages. “It’s easy to treat everything” – Engels’s personal motto. The manufacturer’s son had mistresses, girlfriends and fleeting connections. But historians know two women who were in a romantic relationship with Engels for many years.
In Manchester, he met the Irish sisters Mary and Lydia (Lizzie) Burns. The sisters had no education, they worked in a factory and were the daughters of a factory dyer. Mary became Frederick’s kept woman, and Lizzie became his housekeeper. A few days before Mary’s death in 1863, he entered into a formal marriage with the dying woman.
After the death of his wife, he began to cohabit with her sister Lizzie. The marriage was also contracted a few hours before her death in 1878. Why is that? The answer is simple: so that his relatives do not disinherit. He had no children.
