Shed Skin: TCA Peel

What is a TCA peel? How is it different from other types of skin exfoliation? In what cases it is used and why it should never be carried out independently – we analyze in detail in this article.

TCA peel – what is it?

The TCA peel is a cosmetic exfoliation and skin renewal treatment using trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

This acid coagulates proteins and penetrates deep into the skin, affecting not only dead cells of the surface layer, but also living cells located at the dermal level, thus starting the process of rapid cell renewal.

Thanks to the depth and speed of penetration of the TCA peel, it corrects stubborn skin imperfections that other types of peels simply cannot cope with.

But this undoubted advantage has a downside: the speed and uniformity of the penetration of the peeling agent is difficult to control, so the cosmetologist needs skill and experience to be able to stop the chemical reaction in time.

As a result of protein coagulation, a white coating appears on the skin (it is called “frost”), which indicates that the acid has already destroyed the stratum corneum, has reached living cells and it is time to neutralize it.

The appearance of frost and its intensity are not so obvious, which complicates the procedure. To make the work of dermatologists easier and to make trichloroacetic acid peeling more controllable, new modifications have been developed.

  • Most modern preparations have a gel-like base, due to which the composition is distributed over the skin more evenly and does not penetrate so quickly.

  • Also, the acid is combined with a color indicator (blue or yellow), which changes the color of the skin depending on the depth of penetration of the drug.

The effect of TCA peel on the skin

Trichloroacetic peeling has a great destructive (and at the same time creative) power. The composition can get very deep – to the basement membrane. As a result of such deep damage, the process of regeneration starts, that is, the formation of new cells, including such dermal structures as collagen and elastin.

TCA facial peeling can be carried out both on a large area and pointwise – to eliminate local imperfections.

The procedure itself cannot be called comfortable. With median and deep median exposure, the skin bakes strongly. To alleviate the condition, the face is blown with a fan or fan. Generally unpleasant, but quite tolerable.

Rehabilitation, depending on the depth of exposure, lasts an average of a week: the face is strongly tightened, it becomes covered with a crust, which then begins to recede – this is how new, smoother, even and radiant skin appears. With proper procedure, complications are minimized. The recovery period after TCA peeling is quite difficult, but all the suffering pays off with the result: in the before and after photo, the difference will definitely be noticeable.

What effect can be achieved with the TCA peel procedure?

  • Alignment of the skin relief;

  • smoothing post-acne scars;

  • whitening and removal of age spots;

  • improvement of turgor and lifting effect due to stimulation of dermal structures;

  • wrinkle smoothing;

  • improvement of skin color and indicators such as radiance and uniform pigmentation.

Varieties of trichloroacetic acid peeling

In cosmetology, there are several types of TCA peels. Its depth depends on the concentration of the acid and the composition of the particular preparation.

Surface

At a concentration of 10-15% TCA is used in combined peeling with lactic acid and other agents for specific areas with thin skin – neck, décolleté, eyelids. It is a soft, but at the same time effective peeling.

Median

Median peeling is the main spectrum of TCA. At a concentration of trichloroacetic acid up to 35% (20, 25, 30+%), we can talk about a fairly deep effect that causes regeneration of deep tissues with all the ensuing consequences (including rehabilitation).

Deep

Deep medium peeling (40% trichloroacetic acid) is mainly used for spot correction of skin defects. The depth of peeling is affected not only by the concentration of trichloroacetic acid, but also by the number of layers of the drug applied to the skin.

Indications for a TCA Facial Peel

The main indications for TCA peeling relate primarily to persistent changes in the skin on the face and body, but not only. Among other indications:

  • static wrinkles;

  • post-acne phenomena;

  • гиперпигментация;

  • signs of photoaging;

  • oily, thickened, porous skin;

  • striae (stretch marks).

TCA peeling: procedure protocol

The exact protocol for a TCA peel procedure varies by manufacturer. But the basic steps are the same.

Skin cleansing

Preparation consists in cleansing the skin with a special pre-peel composition, then it is wiped dry and treated with a degreasing lotion.

Composition

The drug for TCA peeling is applied to the skin from the center to the periphery, if necessary, in several layers, after which the “frost” is expected to appear. The exposure may take several minutes.

TCA peeling is characterized by large-lamellar peeling.

Deleting a composition

A special solution is applied to the skin, which is then washed off with cold water.

Skin soothing

A mask or cream is applied to the face or body, which will relieve the sensation of burning and heat, and soothe the skin. From this moment, the rehabilitation process begins, during which strict adherence to the instructions of the cosmetologist is required.

Once again, we draw your attention to the fact that this is an exclusively professional procedure that requires a certain qualification from a specialist. You can do TCA peeling only in a beauty parlor, on your own – in no case, since the consequences can be deplorable.

True, now you can buy TCA peeling for home use, but, fortunately :-), it is very far from a professional preparation both in composition and in efficiency, and, of course, in the method of application. The procedure takes place without visible peeling, and it is naive to expect bright results from it.

Skin care after TCA peel

The cosmetologist will tell you about how to go through the recovery period correctly and without negative consequences, he will recommend products for washing and moisturizing the skin. These should be products specifically designed for post-procedure use.

Soothing Cleanser Foam, SkinCeuticals

Foam tested for use after procedures. It does not contain soap, but at the same time it lathers thickly, is easy to apply and rinses off easily. The composition is enriched with beneficial soothing plant extracts (orchids and cucumber).

You will definitely need a high SPF sunscreen, as photosensitivity increases after such peeling, and the risk of age spots is very high. You will find examples of sunscreens in our review.

Summary results

About TCA peeling in questions and answers.

What is a TCA peel?

This is a type of acid peel. TCA peeling is a peeling with trichloroacetic acid, its distinctive features are deep penetration and fast action. Usually, this acid is used for medium chemical peeling to correct persistent skin changes.

What problems does TCA peeling solve?

TCA peeling is indicated for cicatricial skin changes (it is prescribed for scars and post-acne spots), deep wrinkles, pigmentation and thickened skin. Depending on the percentage, peeling can be superficial, medium or medium-deep. This is a professional cosmetic acid peel, strictly not intended for home use.

How long does rehabilitation take?

Full rehabilitation may take a month, but the most difficult period lasts a week (with median peeling). The skin may remain reddened and swollen for the first couple of days, then tightness appears, a crust forms, which gradually begins to come off in large plates. The process may take several days. It is important in no case to remove the crusts forcibly. They should come off naturally.

How to care for your face after a TCA peel?

You need to use products (washes and moisturizer) recommended by your doctor, and be sure to apply sunscreen with a maximum SPF for a month.
