When Primrose was born, her eyes looked silver-coated, hazy and unnaturally enlarged. It turned out that the girl suffers from congenital glaucoma — a rare disease caused by an abnormal structure of the eyeball. The mother gave her up shortly after birth, and the baby was put up for adoption.
- Eight years ago, a girl with dull, “silver” eyes was born in China. It was a symptom of the disease — congenital glaucoma
- Congenital glaucoma, also called childhood glaucoma, occurs very rarely. It causes the characteristic eye appearance and damage to the optic nerve. Often it ends in blindness

A girl with congenital glaucoma
Primrose, known in the media as “the little silver-eyed girl”, was born in 2014 in China. Only two years later did a family find a decision to adopt a sick, blind child — Erin and Chris Austin from Braselton, Georgia (USA). They already had two children of their own, but when they saw Primrose, they made the decision to take her into the family. They didn’t mind that the two-year-old had congenital glaucoma, which meant she would need special care.
- Eye pain. Diseases that are manifested by pain in the eyeball
What does little Primrose look like today? Her adoptive parents are happy to share information on social media, hence it is known that the girl underwent an operation to remove her eyes, which turned out to be necessary, because thanks to her, the girl stopped experiencing constant, intense pain.
Erin Austin, the girl’s adoptive mother, posted her photo on Instagram just before her adoption.

Congenital glaucoma – what is this disease?
Little Primrose was born with congenital glaucoma. This disease occurs as a result of a defective development of the child’s eye still in the fetal stage. The tissue is then overgrown, the task of which is to filter the intraocular fluid from the anterior chamber of the eye into the bloodstream. As a result of this defect, the intraocular pressure increases and aqueous humor begins to accumulate.

The disease is visible at first glance. It results in a blue staining of the sclera due to the stretching of the eyeball walls. In Primrose’s case, the eyeballs were almost silver in color. There is also opacification of the iris and usually also damage to the optic nerve due to the pressure of fluids on the nerves and blood vessels that nourish the nerve.
The best results in the treatment of glaucoma are achieved by surgery, which involves cutting the overgrown tissue and preventing it from regrowth. It should be performed as early as possible, before the optic nerve atrophies and blinds completely. Usually, pharmacological treatment is used before the operation.
Primrose was out of luck. The results of the research showed that one eye has increased pressure and retinal detachment, and the other eye has reduced by half. In her case, it turned out that it was necessary to remove the eyes surgically. Only thanks to this was she able to stop feeling constant pain and start enjoying life in her new family. The procedure was successful and the girl is currently waiting for eye implants.
“We are so grateful that he is ours” — writes Erin Austin on Primrose. – “She has struggled all her life just to exist. He is the bravest, most enduring man I know, without a doubt ”.
