She thought she had gained weight. It turned out she had a 15 kg tumor in her belly

The recent case of a patient from Krakow can be a perfect example of what the lack of regular preventive examinations may lead to. A 50-year-old woman explained her weight gain by her mature age. As it turned out later, there was a 15-kilogram tumor in her abdomen. The lesion has grown to such proportions because of a late diagnosis.

Krakow: a patient with a 15 kg tumor

Doctors from the Hospital of St. Rafał in Krakow was removed from a 50-year-old patient an ovarian tumor weighing 15 kg. The operation, which lasted about 40 minutes, was performed by Dr. Paweł Gruszecki, a specialist in obstetrics, gynecology and oncological gynecology. The doctor shows in this case how amazing regular preventive examinations are important, even if we do not feel pain.

Dr Paweł Gruszecki: Neoplastic changes are usually not painful

– Neoplastic changes are usually not painful, sometimes they cause flatulence, nausea or abdominal discomfort, and these ailments can be easily ignored, blaming a stressful lifestyle or a meal eaten on the run – explains Dr. Paweł Gruszecki.

A similar situation occurred in the case of 50-year-old female patients. The woman noticed that she had gained weight. However, she did not consider this a disturbing symptom. She ignored the weight gain, believing it to be a normal process in adulthood. Moreover, the patient did not visit the gynecologist regularly. As a result of too late diagnosis, the tumor grew and the operation was extensive.

– The operation itself was short, it took about 40 minutes. Unfortunately, with such a large tumor, we had to perform an extensive abdominal incision, which qualifies the procedure as much more invasive. At the same time, it is a greater burden for the patient and longer convalescence lasting from 4 to 6 weeks – emphasizes Dr. Paweł Gruszecki.

Fortunately, the tumor in a 50-year-old patient turned out to be a benign lesion.

The doctor calls for regular examinations

Dr. Paweł Gruszecki emphasizes the importance of regular preventive examinations. But it is not everything. According to the doctor, any disturbing symptoms should prompt women to visit a gynecologist.

– Do not underestimate the discomfort in the abdomen, problems with appetite or pain in the lower abdomen. Painful periods, which may indicate endometriosis, should also be a warning sign. It also happens that the tumor grows and does not make itself felt at all. Therefore, it is also good to carry out a prophylactic transvaginal ultrasound scan about once a year – advises Dr. Paweł Gruszecki.
