She takes care of her seriously ill husband. The project “We can do it” provides support

A situation in which you suddenly need to deal with a seriously ill person close to us always causes emotions and the feeling that we will not be able to cope.

What does caring for a sick family member look like?

For several years, Mrs. Elżbieta has been taking care of her seriously ill husband. Mr. Kazimierz has Parkinson’s disease.

– The disease started to progress, he went on a pension, something else helped me on the farm, now you just have to look after him so that he does not hurt himself. The disease has progressed in such a way that it needs to be monitored – says Elżbieta.

Mrs. Elżbieta had to learn everything on her own.

– There is no help here, that someone would come to us, tell us something, explain something, there are no such things. I have to learn everything myself – she adds.

Support and help for caregivers of dependent people, who are in a similar situation to Mrs. Elżbieta, is carried out by the project “We’ll be able to”, under which, among other things, free instructional workshops are organized.

Workshops as part of the project “We can do it” are organized in every voivodeship. Their goal is to train caregivers of chronically ill people in the basic skills necessary to properly help their loved ones. It is mainly about basic care and hygiene activities, such as:

  1. full body toilet;
  2. change of diaper pants;
  3. toilet of intimate areas;
  4. washing the head;
  5. shipment.

An important aspect helping caregivers of sick people is meeting other people in a similar situation. This is an opportunity to exchange experiences, as well as tell about your feelings and emotions. This makes it easier to deal with problems, find understanding, and find things that bring joy and good energy in everyday life.
