«Twenty years ago I got pregnant. It was a magical moment. The dreamed-up, well-mannered child appeared on the first black and white ultrasound image.
I was euphoric for three months. After all, I was supposed to never have a child!
Then another ultrasound examination followed and the doctor’s heavy words: Something is wrong. The world collapsed, a race against time and attempts to save the Dwarf began. The experimental methods did not help. Precious time was passing.
How to describe the months of fighting for a child in a few sentences? How? I am a copywriter, I work with words … and I cannot express the carousel of emotions that accompanied me then.
A parade of hospitals, a parade of doctors, countless tests.
A child has always been a child for me, not a fetus, it did not have developed lungs and other key organs, such as the brain or kidneys. Only the heart worked.
Another hospital, in Starynkiewicza (University Center for Women’s and Newborn Health of the Medical University of Warsaw at Starynkiewicza Square in Warsaw – editor’s note). They didn’t try anything here. They took no action apart from monitoring the baby’s heartbeat. Here they just wanted to haul my pregnancy to the end.
Here prof. Marianowski said to me: – As long as the child’s heart is beating, we will not have an abortion. When she stops beating and must finally stop, we will start saving you. So that you wouldn’t die here.
Twice a day I listened to my boy’s bird heart through the loudspeakers of the device. Because it was a boy. Despair was mixed with rage, frustration, a sense of imprisonment and… love. I cried out in pain and despair. Day by day. Week after week.
Professor Dębski saved me.
He no longer endangered the young woman’s life. He saved not only my life, but also my sanity. Or what’s left of them then.
