Onion “Shakespeare” refers to vegetable crops of early ripening, it is well and long stored, does not shoot. It is characterized by high resistance to many diseases, often affecting bulbs of other varieties. It withstands severe frosts and is used for winter planting.

This is a Dutch variety, the bulbs of which have a clear rounded shape, weight 100-180 g. This variety is distinguished by dry, light brown integumentary scales. The pulp is dense, juicy, with a semi-sharp taste. The photo shows the mature onion “Shakespeare”, where its high commercial qualities are clearly visible.

The onion variety adapts well to various soils; when harvested in the mature stage, it is stored without losing the appearance and basic taste for 9-12 months.

If the onion is provided with favorable conditions, not only the yield will increase, but also the size of the bulb itself.

Variety “Shakespeare” gives an excellent harvest even on poorly fertile soils and with good care can reach 500-700 kg per one hundred square meters. The ripening period begins 2,5 months after planting.

How to plant onions correctly?

When describing Shakespeare onions, it should be noted that the main advantages of its winter planting are:

  • long shelf life;
  • does not rot, does not release arrows;
  • requires a minimum of care;
  • resistant to disease.

Onions ripen 3-4 weeks earlier than regular spring onions, and green and juicy feathers can be used in cooking in May

For winter planting, you need to choose a set that has a beautiful and healthy appearance, without spots and damage. You can plant onions from early September to mid-November. Before planting, the soil must be deeply dug in advance, humus must be added with the addition of wood ash. The onion beds should be made high, this will help reduce freezing if the winter is suddenly snowless, and will not allow the melt water to stagnate in the spring.

After planting the seed, it is necessary to mulch with dry foliage, hay or legume tops; dry branches can be thrown on top. To strengthen resistance to fungal diseases, the onion must be watered with a solution: a glass of salt in a bucket of water

Shakespeare onions are a suitable option for those who want to grow a good and high-quality harvest on their land in a short time, without much effort. It has excellent characteristics, thanks to which many gardeners for winter planting prefer this particular Dutch variety.
