What do people need sex for? The answer is only apparently obvious – to have children and to enjoy the act of copulation itself. Without this pleasure, anyone would want to look for a partner, waste energy to please her – or him, only to then devote his life to raising offspring, which can give a good bone after all. So that we don’t want to pass our genes down from generation to generation, nature invented the pleasure of sex and programmed us to pursue sexual fulfillment most of our lives.

Today, of course, we can outsmart nature and achieve this pleasure without the consequences of unplanned offspring. But we also know that it is worth having sex not only for pleasure or for procreation. Regular sexual activity is one of the best recipes for a healthy body and mind. Scientists are still discovering new areas of our health where having sex and experiencing orgasm is crucial. Regardless of age.
For the brain and the heart
There is a lot of truth in the saying that sex starts in the head. Our desire for sex depends to a large extent on the state of the psyche. – Especially in women, the desire for sexual intercourse may depend on many factors of a psychological nature, e.g. what happened at work, the phase in which the family is, and finally the phase of the menstrual cycle – says sexologist Michał Pozdał from SWPS University. . For sex to be successful and bring the expected profits, it must express the needs and desires of both sides of the relationship. – From a psychological point of view, it is better not to have sex at all than to do something against yourself, under the pressure exerted by the other party in the relationship – says Michał Pozdał. And he warns that such forced sex, which only one party wants, causes trauma, anger, disappointment and other negative emotions in the other that do not create a bond but destroy it. – There can be no question of any benefits then – emphasizes the sexologist.
- Physical proximity is the best weapon against stress. But Poles have a problem with desire
It is different if both partners want sex and enjoy it. There is probably no stronger factor that binds the pair together. – It is caused by the cocktail of hormones that is released during sex. First, under the influence of touch, hugging, hormones such as vasopressin and oxytocin are released, which induce a feeling of attachment and love, and then, during the sexual act, the brain is flooded with endorphins, our internal happiness hormones – says Michał Pozdał.

Regular, satisfying sex is the best antidepressant prophylaxis. Although, doctors emphasize, it is not the case that sex can cure someone of depression – on the contrary, one of the main symptoms of depression is often loss of libido, which the patient is unable to do anything about. However, sex has the power to prevent depression and anxiety by the fact that it has an anti-stress effect, researchers from the University of Zurich have found. The hormones secreted by the body during sex lower the level of the stress hormone – cortisol, and thus protect the brain from its harmful effects.
The anti-stress effect of sexual intercourse is so strong that it can bear the tensions that accumulate in our body throughout the day or week. It is not only a matter of physical activity, quite intense during intercourse, but also the influence of happiness hormones. – Sexual activity has a physiotherapeutic effect, supports the efficiency of muscles and joints – says the expert. Clamping and relaxing the muscles during intercourse, especially during orgasm, makes them more flexible and makes them better oxygenated.
When we have sex, our heart rate increases, as it does when we play sports. However, in combination with the release of anti-stress hormones, it is sex that has the power to protect our heart against cardiovascular diseases. Researchers from the New England Research Institute in Massachusetts in the US have shown that men who quit sex over the age of 40 or had intermittent sex were twice as likely to have a stroke or a heart attack! Scientists have proved this by analyzing the health history of more than 16 Americans over a XNUMX-year period. They are convinced that there is a very similar relationship in women.
- Safe sex: it is for our health, it is not forced and we enjoy it
So that the head does not hurt
Frequent use of the charms of sex makes the skin younger and the body cleans itself of harmful metabolic products. Women especially become more beautiful after sex. Even in the state of arousal before sexual intercourse, there is an increased secretion of sex hormones – estrogen and testosterone, which also plays a large role in the woman’s body – scientists from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada have found. The increased level of these hormones makes the skin better supplied with blood and flushed. Paradoxically, the more sex we have, the more we feel like it, because our libido rises. And it’s not worth giving up sex when you have a headache! – argue scientists from Headache Clinic at Southern Illinois University. They conducted a study in women suffering from severe migraines and found that after sex, especially after orgasm, almost all women had less pain or disappeared completely.

Regular sexual activity is also very important to male health. Semen ejaculation is one of the most important factors in preventing prostate cancer, say scientists from the US National Cancer Institute, who studied nearly 30. men aged 46-81. They observed that men who had at least 21 ejaculations a month had significantly less prostate cancer.
- I advise my patients: have sex, please! Preferably for a lifetime.
What if the man doesn’t have a partner? Nothing is lost, because you can also have sex alone. According to oncologists, whether orgasm is achieved through sex with another person or through masturbation, it is equally beneficial for prostate health. Likewise, in women, not having a partner doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from experiencing sexual fulfillment. On the contrary, they should, because regular orgasm prevents cervical inflammation and urinary tract infections. Above all, however, it strengthens the pelvic floor muscles, which prevents such inconvenience as the reduction of the reproductive organs and prevents stress urinary incontinence.
Mature pleasures
Having an orgasm is undoubtedly beneficial to our health, but does this mean that sex without climaxing is pointless? – Absolutely not. You can’t approach zero-one sex, it’s just penetration and orgasm. After all, our eroticism is much more – touching, caressing, even talking – says Michał Pozdał. It is important to realize this, especially as we grow older. – It is more difficult for older people to achieve orgasm for purely physiological reasons, but this does not mean that you have to give up sexual activity then, because we also need it in old age. My practice shows that the problem with lack of orgasm is not the person who has not experienced it, but her partner or partner. They often take the blame, think that they have failed, that they are not attractive enough. And this is not true, this is simply human physiology – explains the sexologist.
The limitations of aging apply to both sexes. Men are worried about erection problems, and in women, intercourse may also cause discomfort due to physiologically changing vaginal moisture. This last problem, however, is easy to remedy by buying the right lubricant – it can work wonders in terms of increasing the pleasure of intercourse. Also, for men who have problems with erection, medicine can offer more and more effective drugs that increase sexual performance.

It is much more difficult to remove psychological barriers, e.g. shame because of the changing body, but also the waning desire. Sexologists know that satisfying sex is sometimes the hardest thing in a relationship, especially one that has been going on for many years. – The extinction of desire does not mean that you cannot rebuild it, rediscover yourself – says Michał Pozdał. – If a couple has ever had a strong sexual desire at the beginning of a relationship, this is a very good prognosis for a relationship, even in therapy – argues the sexologist. And at home? – For example, you can start fantasizing about sex and masturbate while doing it. It is possible that we will discover new ways of enjoying ourselves that we will be able to teach our partner – the specialist advises.
However, it is not worth giving up and considering sex as a pleasure only for young people. It is in adulthood that the health benefits of sexual activity are greatest, researchers from the Dutch Mental Health Center in Aatrecht have found. They examined 1,7 thousand. people aged 58 to 98 years. Volunteers underwent a series of difficult tests to assess their cognitive abilities and memory, which usually deteriorate in old age. And to everyone’s surprise, the more often the participants had sex, the better they scored on mental fitness tests.
And that seems reason enough for sex – whether in a couple or alone – to remain our lifelong good friend. Seeking healthier pleasure with a candle!
