Severe NOPs in children and adolescents. What diseases? [WE CHECK]
Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

From June 7, children from 19 years of age can receive the COVID-12 vaccine in Poland. They receive a Pfizer preparation. However, some parents are concerned that adolescents may be at risk of severe vaccine reactions after receiving the vaccine. We analyzed the report of the National Institute of Public Health to find out if this is the case.

  1. Vaccinating children and adolescents against COVID-19 has been going on for over three months
  2. Until August 16, in the group of 12-17 years, the first dose was taken by 685 thousand. 277 people
  3. There were severe post-vaccination reactions in adolescents. These were mainly myocarditis and pericarditis and anaphylactic shock

Adverse reactions after vaccination against COVID-19 in children and adolescents. We’re checking the report

Some parents are concerned more about the adverse reactions of their children with Pfizer than the coronavirus. To find out how many severe side effects have been reported so far in the 12-18 year old age group, see the report from the National Institute of Public Health.

The latest report was published on September 16. It shows that so far, after the Pfizer vaccine (and therefore the only one that can be taken by children from 12 years of age), a total of 265 severe adverse reactions to vaccination have occurred. However, they mainly concerned not children, but seniors.

For the youngest, the most common conditions that followed vaccination were myocarditis or pericarditis. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has previously reported that they are a very rare side effect of mRNA vaccines (i.e. Pfizer and Moderna). In total, five such events have been recorded among Polish teenagers so far. They were all about teenage boys. The youngest was 12 years old and the oldest – 18.

The report also includes information about several cases of anaphylactic shock among adolescents vaccinated against COVID-19. There were five of them and they concerned boys and girls between 12 and 15 years of age.

In addition to the most common NOPs, adolescents also experienced single reactions such as cerebellar ischemic stroke (in a 14-year-old), palsy of the facial nerve (in a 15-year-old), loss of consciousness with apnea (in a 17-year-old), convulsions (in 15-year-olds) or disorientation and balance disorders (in a 14-year-old woman).

The scale of heavy NOPs among young people is therefore very small. The EMA’s statement that the benefits of Pfizer in young people outweigh the risks of the vaccination, therefore, is confirmed.

Myocarditis Symptoms – How to recognize them?

Given that myocarditis or pericarditis can occur in a teenager who is vaccinated against COVID-19, it is helpful to learn how these conditions manifest themselves.

– Such disturbing symptoms that require consultation with a doctor are pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest – explained cardiologist Dr. Bartosz Hudzik. – Sometimes, shortness of breath or palpitations may also occur, which are indicative of additional heart rhythm problems in the patient. When patients report these symptoms, they should be tested for myocarditis or pericarditis. Such a basic one is the determination of troponin levels (markers of myocardial necrosis), electrocardiography, echocardiography and possibly cardiac resonance imaging.

At the same time, it should be emphasized that in the case of pericarditis or myocarditis after vaccination against COVID-19, the prognosis was very good.

– According to a report from the United States, out of almost 800 people with myocarditis by the end of May, 80 percent. patients has already been cured – said Dr. Bartosz Hudzik. – In the case of 20 percent. treatment was ongoing or there were no data on their health. Taking into account European and American data, it seems that myocarditis after vaccinations is a largely self-limiting disease. In most cases, it did not lead to complications directly. However, we have to wait for the results of long-term follow-up of these patients.

Why should we vaccinate children against COVID-19? The expert explains

Experts have long urged parents to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. They emphasize that new variants of the virus can be very dangerous to young organisms.

– Children do not get sick as mildly as we thought – told MedTvoiLokony Dr. Lidia Stopyra, infectious disease and pediatrician. – At the beginning of the pandemic, it was said that children did not get sick or that the infection was asymptomatic. The children were also said not to transmit the virus. And in that first wave it was like that. However, in the second, and even more so in the third wave, we had a lot of serious illnesses in children. There were also serious complications. Fortunately, they are not common, but they do occur nonetheless. So we should vaccinate children just to keep them safe. The second point is that children play a vital role in transmitting the virus. At this point, if we are to achieve population immunity, we must also vaccinate our children.

Lack of immunity to COVID-19 in children may result in the development of PIMS, i.e. a multi-system inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19. These are serious ailments that appear a few weeks after infection with the coronavirus. They can be avoided precisely by vaccination against COVID-19.
