Seven seniors infected with variant B1.621 (formerly known as “Colombian”) of the coronavirus have died in Belgium. The incident took place in a nursing home in the city of Zaventem near Brussels. “The dead were between 80 and 90 years old, some of them in poor physical condition,” said Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Leuven who did the nursing home research. They were all fully vaccinated.

In total, 1.621 residents and a few staff members were infected with variant B21 in the nursing home. As Ranst revealed, the workers experienced only mild symptoms.

Additional studies will soon be carried out to verify whether nursing home residents actually died from COVID-19 or from other respiratory diseases.

Coronavirus variant B.1.621 was first detected in Colombia, and in recent weeks it has also appeared in the United States (2% of cases), but it is very rare in Europe, mainly in Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland.

In Belgium, B.1.621 currently accounts for less than 1% of the total. cases of COVID-19, the Delta variant dominates in this country, which accounts for 95 percent. infections. The second in line is Alpha.
