We are experiencing one of the most extreme and unpredictable situations in recent world history. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic requires the confinement millions of people in many countries as the main measure of containment. This crisis is a challenge both at a political and health level, but also at an emotional level for all individuals who see their freedom of movement totally limited for an as yet undetermined period of time. This last aspect is one of the most worrisome since it is the Stress produced by the isolation something we all have to deal with, added to the uncertainty of the different stadiums through which we will pass during the next weeks.
In China, a country that has already begun to consider the pandemic controlled, and, therefore, to lift the confinement measures, they have begun to make an analysis of everything they have experienced. The Ipsos China experts have defined the different emotional phases the population has gone through to serve as a guide to countries where they are still in an early stage of the crisis. This information is useful for companies that need to find new ways to contact their consumers in such a critical situation.
Emotional phases during confinement
1- Disbelief. This first moment is marked by confusion and fear caused by a large amount of very imprecise information and the proliferation of rumors of doubtful veracity.
2- Preparation. It is in this phase that plans begin to change, store supplies and deal with the lack of stock and shortages of certain products.
3- Adjustment. It is the moment when you really start to adapt your day to day to new restrictions and new situations as they arise. New routines are developed
4- Acclimatization. In this phase, new routines are consolidated and the daily challenges of both boredom or laziness and continuous forced family contact are faced. Positive aspects of the new situation begin to be discovered as people explore new activities and interests to spend time on.
5- Resistance. Tension increases with the passage of time due to movement restrictions and a social life limited to the maximum, something that directly affects the mood and personal relationships. A state that is aggravated by the uncertainty about how long this confinement will last.
6- Alivio. At this stage you begin to feel relief and hope at the reopening of businesses, as the end of this situation is in sight. People feel happy at the possibility of resuming their lives normally.
7- Fear. After the relief, new concerns about job and financial security arise after this crisis, when the economic consequences begin to be evident.
What phase is Spain in?
From Ipsos in Spain they have wanted to know in which phase of the previous ones the Spaniards are, for this they have carried out a consultation in their community «What & Why», and the result has been that we are in phase 3: Adjustment. We are beginning to adapt routines to confinement, the reconciliation of family and work life, since now everything takes place in the same space, as well as to limit leaving the house as much as possible and only have long-distance relationships with friends and loved ones .
